Changing quick link in overall_header.html issue

Post by eae80 »

Good Evening, I want to first start out by saying I am unfamiliar with phpbb and its back end work. I recently was assisting a family member in changing a "get me out of here" quick link on their forum. I was able to find it in the source files (public_html/forum/styles/(style name)/theme/template/overall_header.html. I was able to change it from www.google.com to www.duckduckgo.com sucessfully and when I cleared the cache and click the link it still took me to Google vice duckduckgo. I went back in to check my work and it still said www.duckduckgo.com in the source files, but yet when I right click on the link and check elements it still shows www.google.com. I am looking for some advice and assistance in completing this evolution. I thank you in advance for any assistance or insight you may be able to provide.

purge the cache from the admin panel main page.

then refresh your browser a few times.

Hi robert,

Thanks for the reply. We have purged the cache multiple times and also refreshed the browser repeatedly. It's still going to Google.

Any other suggestions?

how about a link to the board in question so we can see what is going on.

also, I don't recall any kind of a "get me out of here" link anywhere in phpbb.
please explain exactly where this link is in the header when you give us the link so we can see it.

Hi again,

Here's the link:

https://isurvive.org/forum/index.php?si ... 54f0638f46

The "Get me out of here" button isn't actually in the header, it runs along the right side of the screen. You can't miss it. But in the source files it's in the overall_header file.

When an edit isn't working it means you're editing the wrong file.

ok, looking at this file: https://isurvive.org/forum/styles/isurv ... eader.html

it still says google.com
that means that either you edited the wrong file ( maybe you edited the one in prosilver ) or
you did not upload your edited file to the correct place, or did not upload it at all, or you have some sort of cache
somewhere ( like cloudfare ) that has not been purged yet.

Hello, I agree with the previous speakers. Some observations mentioned in addition. Hint > Attention only excerpts as far as visible in the browser tool > Is it possible that a guest sees a different design?

Because your style named isurvive and your style.cfg writes:
https://isurvive.org/forum/styles/isurvive/style.cfg

Code: Select all

...[...]...

# General Information about this style
name = isurvive
copyright =
style_version = 3.2.7
phpbb_version = 3.2.7

# Defining a different template bitfield
# template_bitfield = lNg=

# Parent style
# Set value to empty or to this style's name if this style does not have a parent style
parent = isurvive

prosilver is not the parent style?

But your stylesheet.css for isurvive writes default phpBB 3.1.x style - view-source:
https://isurvive.org/forum/styles/isurvive/theme/stylesheet.css?assets_version=110

Code: Select all

/*  phpBB3 Style Sheet
    --------------------------------------------------------------
	Style name: prosilver (the default phpBB 3.1.x style)
	Based on style:
	Original author:	Tom Beddard ( http://www.subblue.com/ )
	Modified by:		phpBB Limited ( https://www.phpbb.com/ )
    --------------------------------------------------------------
*/

@import url("normalize.css");
@import url("base.css");
@import url("utilities.css");
@import url("common.css");
@import url("links.css");
@import url("content.css");
@import url("buttons.css");
@import url("cp.css");
@import url("forms.css");
@import url("icons.css");
@import url("colours.css");
@import url("responsive.css");

Your stylesheet.css for prosilver writes - view-source:
https://isurvive.org/forum/styles/prosilver/theme/stylesheet.css?assets_version=110

Code: Select all

/*  phpBB3 Style Sheet
    --------------------------------------------------------------
	Style name: prosilver (the default phpBB 3.2.x style)
	Based on style:
	Original author:	Tom Beddard ( http://www.subblue.com/ )
	Modified by:		phpBB Limited ( https://www.phpbb.com/ )
    --------------------------------------------------------------
*/

@import url("normalize.css?v=3.2");
@import url("base.css?v=3.2");
@import url("utilities.css?v=3.2");
@import url("common.css?v=3.2");
@import url("links.css?v=3.2");
@import url("content.css?v=3.2");
@import url("buttons.css?v=3.2");
@import url("cp.css?v=3.2");
@import url("forms.css?v=3.2");
@import url("icons.css?v=3.2");
@import url("colours.css?v=3.2");
@import url("responsive.css?v=3.2");

And your source code writes: prosilver instead of isurvive. Attention only excerpts as far as visible in the browser tool!

Code: Select all

...[...]...

<!--
	phpBB style name: prosilver
	Based on style: prosilver (this is the default phpBB3 style)
	Original author:  Tom Beddard ( http://www.subBlue.com/ )
	Modified by:
-->

...[...]...

Code: Select all

...[...]...

<link href="./assets/css/font-awesome.min.css?assets_version=110" rel="stylesheet">
<link href="./styles/isurvive/theme/stylesheet.css?assets_version=110" rel="stylesheet">
<link href="./styles/isurvive/theme/en/stylesheet.css?assets_version=110" rel="stylesheet">

...[...]...

Code: Select all

...[...]...

<body id="phpbb" class="nojs notouch section-index ltr ">
<div class="gmocenter">
  <a href='https://www.google.com'>Get Me Out of Here!</a>
</div>

...[...]...

Accordingly, the misconduct may be easier to explain. Have you already checked this: Heredity including content and names, are mixed up?
Errors are difficult to isolate, so only a few observations.

===
In the meantime, phpBB-Rhea has released, system-version 3.2.9 "The Rise of Bertie":
viewtopic.php?t=2534536
https://area51.phpbb.com/code-changes/3.2.7/
https://www.phpbb.com/downloads/3.2/install

BTW: However, phpBB-Proteus 3.3.0 is already available.

Best regards :)

Hi,

So, let me explain some background here... My husband started this thread for me as he was trying to help me get this figured out. What he didn't mention in the first post was that we tried this multiple times. The first time, even though all we did was replace the link to Google with Duck duck go, the whole site crashed, so we restored it. The second time the link DID redirect to Duck duck go, but the formatting of the site was all wonky, so we restored again. And then the next time nothing bad happened, but it's still redirecting to Google, even though in the isurvive style folder it says Duck duck go.

We definitely changed it in the isurvive style folder. Didn't even go into the prosilver folder. And we were using our web host's built in plain text editor. You just make your changes, click "Save Changes" and stuff is supposed to save. I've made some other changes to things on the site and never had any of these problems before, so we really don't understand why this has been so difficult.

We're going to have to post an advert in the help wanted section here anyway to get the site updated, as my husband and I couldn't figure out how to do that either, so maybe we'll just have to add this to that. None of the people who were involved in building/maintaining the site originally are around anymore, and we haven't had any luck finding a permanent tech person, as no one we've approached has been comfortable with phpBB. I've been trying to learn all I can so that I can take care of things, but this is all a bit much for me. I've never been super tech-savvy.

Hi Talk19Zehn. Looks like we were posting at the same time. Full disclosure - I have no clue what any of what you said means. I'll ask my husband to take a look when he gets home and see if he understands any of it. Thanks for the reply, though!
