Awesome mod and super simple to install. Can't wait to see if I get the same results others have. These bots are driving me nuts.

I installed this mod 48 hours ago and have not had a bot registration since. I was getting on average 35 a day.

I will post back in a week with another update.

Thanks for the mod! Really simple and effective.

We made some little adjustments to your mod to make it even more handy:

Move images to their "native" place:

Move: root/includes/captcha/*.jpg
To: root/images/captcha/*.jpg

Let the mod work regardless of the names and number of the images (but they still will have to be .jpg 360x96). Also make it work even if there are no images at all:

Open: includes/captcha/captcha_gd.php

Find

Code: Select all

$img = imagecreatefromjpeg($phpbb_root_path . 'includes/captcha/bg' . mt_rand(0,9) . '.jpg');
Replace With

Code: Select all

$img = (($avantibot_images = glob($phpbb_root_path . 'images/captcha/*.jpg')) ? imagecreatefromjpeg($avantibot_images[array_rand($avantibot_images)]) : imagecreatetruecolor($this->width, $this->height));
We really hope this was useful.
Thanks to 2by2host. Great job! I will add these features in next version.

Seems like some of them might have a way around it unless they were human submission. I have 3 get through so far in the past 24 hours. Good thing I am set to admin approval. All in all, I am still very happy, 3 compared to 30-35 makes my job easier!

Looks great, but why BOT can simple remove background using HTML and then view CAPTCHA?

My board was getting spammed pretty heavily and this cut back a lot.

I've done the mod, and I've added the images to the folder etc, but it's still looking at the old captcha images which is just a plain colour background with the text on it, rather than the one of the images...

How have others sorted this?

I've done that about 5 times. I've also redone them as I kept the original files

I hope James will not mind...

The zipped file has ten JPEG images that I've taken at my last trip to the beach, resized for captcha. The pictures are royalty free and you may use them if you wish so. They've been tested with James' Advanced Visual Anti Bot and phpBB 3.0.4 with no issues. The letters and numbers are somewhat easier to read, especially when the foreground noise is disabled. Just my subjective opinion...

Here's the bg0.jpg image:

I used to have issues with editing as well. Then I came across a better editor than Notepad.
Try using PSPad, it is freeware. http://www.pspad.com

Also, make sure you have the GD Captcha enables in the ACP.

the php version seems to be the culprit in some mod installs working fine and some not working..

it works for me with php ver. 5.2.9 but not when running with php ver. 5.2.8..
php ver. 5.2.9 adds the GD enhancements..

A most effective MOD and so simple to install.

Installed it yesterday and up until then I was getting over 20 spam registration requests per day. Suddenly it has all stopped. Today, not a single spammer.

Thanks for a really useful MOD.
