You can try out the mod here:

http://phpbbservices.com/phpBB3

Look for the Smartfeed link in the header.

However, to see how it works differently when you are registered, you will have to register.

could you provide a demo please? I already have an rss mod installed and would prefer to see this one in action before I bother with removing the other and adding this.

How is it possible for them to have access to private forums? I don't think rss feeds could send login info so just wondering.

when an authorized user accesses a protected forum, he gets the RSS link for that forum...and thus, can set to receive the feeds...
I am applying this mod to test this....will let you know...

BTW nice mod MarkDHamill...congrats...

It's a bit complex, but an encryption key is generated which is passed with the URL. It's not completely secure as if you give the URL to someone else it could be compromised. However, the encryption key can also be tailored so that it only works within a given IP range.

No, the mod does not place an RSS feed next to each forum.

If you use Feedburner, which is now a Google product, it can insert ads between items in the feed for you. See http://feeburner.google.com for more details.

Hi, great mod! I really love to have so many settings that allow me customization of the feed. You should post some screenshots in this topic.
I have a problem with my rss reader. It is a Firefox extension called "Newsfox". Checking the feed for updates works once but after that I am logged off the forum. After logging in again I can receive updates one more time. So each time checking for updates logs me off the board. I have the same problem with another rss mod for phpBB3. But I don't have this problem with other rss readers. Do you have any Idea what could be the cause of this problem? Maybe something with cookies?

Thanks,
Justin

Try going into the ACP and making sure the Show Smartfeed Sessions switch (at the bottom) is set to No.

Here is the logic which kills the session used by smartfeed.php. Remember this program when run can run as any user.

Code: Select all

$kill_session = true;
if ($config['sf_show_sessions'])
{
	$kill_session = false;
}
elseif ($user->data['user_type'] == USER_FOUNDER)
{
	$kill_session = false;
}
elseif (strpos($user->referer,'smartfeed_url') === true)
{
	$kill_session = false;
}

// Kill the session, but only if smartfeed_url.php was not calling this program. Otherwise, the user's phpBB session will end
if ($kill_session)
{
	kill_session();
}

Thank you, MarkDHamill!

Show Smartfeed Sessions was set to 'No'. I disabled the call to kill_session() by editing smartfeed.php:

Code: Select all

if ($kill_session)
{
   //kill_session();
}
Still, I get logged off.

BTW, when I am logged off the board and check for updates there is something about an error in the retrieved file's last lines I don't know if it has anything to do with my problem. I got this using Opera and Firefox:

Code: Select all

</rss>
<br />
<b>Fatal error</b>:  Cannot redeclare login_db() (previously declared in /opt/phpbb3/includes/auth/auth_db.php:27) in <b>/opt/phpbb3/includes/auth/auth_db.php</b> on line <b>235</b><br />

If this can pass feedburner validation, this is a very good mod.

If you commented out kill_session and are still getting logged out, something else is going on.

Are you using a non-standard template? Something other than prosilver or subsilver2? Perhaps a template change was applied incorrectly?
