Re: phpBB3 Error Logging Tool

Post by gavo » Mon Dec 31, 2007 5:59 pm

I have 0 errors logged from my templates which is good thats what I wanted to check, but if I enable the cache error logging I get 1000`s of errors instantly, but don't understand any of them, is this very bad? the board seems to run great even with 800 users online.

Should I re mod a board & test the cache for errors after installing each mod, I have about 14 mods installed and I upgrade them as soon as there is an updated version.

Thanks

No, the cache errors are not real errors, or rather, there is no issue with them. It is available for the purpose of tracking down bugs if you need to.
For the most part you should leave it off unless you know what you are doing. ;)

Thanks, I will just use the template error logging, I only enabled the cache logging out of interest.

Two words:
Great mod!

No more debug lines messing up my users pages while I test new features!

EDIT: Just A thought: This could also have applications with security because some SQL injection techniques rely on errors. Not only will the errors not show to the user, the logfiles will expose them as the hacker they are and allow you to ban them/their IP :P

Potentially, maybe.
The problem is that many times (depending on what type of hack they are trying) they’ll end up with a Server 500 error, which will show up in the Apache Error log, and not this error log. Also most Fatal errors won’t appear in the error logger either, but those will be in your server PHP error logs.

But the script does expose some interesting things if you have anything broken. :)

The mod works perfect, but I have a small problem. I'm using a dynamic sig and the phpbb3 error logging mod gives me an error by not allowing the dynamic sig to display.

Error:

Code: Select all

Warning: error_log(/store/php_error.log) [function.error-log]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /homepages/23/d170898697/htdocs/clip101/forum101/includes/functions.php on line 2915

Warning: error_log(/store/php_error.log) [function.error-log]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /homepages/23/d170898697/htdocs/clip101/forum101/includes/functions.php on line 2915
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /homepages/23/d170898697/htdocs/clip101/forum101/sig.php on line 72: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /homepages/23/d170898697/htdocs/clip101/forum101/includes/functions.php:2915)
For me to resolve this matter, I had to comment out: (includes/functions.php)

Code: Select all

error_log("[$error_timestamp] [phpBB Debug] [client $user_ip] [File $user_page] PHP Notice: in file $errfile on line $errline : " . $error_msg . "\n", 3, $error_log);
Is there another way I can solve this situation?

Thanks

is this also a server hog for other people.

I have also created an acp module for this so if you want it just reply :) .

Is the module causing it to hog the server handyman?

Hey,
Thanx for this mod.
Just for reporting it, your "modx.prosilver.en.xsl" file is bad, I mean it doesn't show up correctly. :ugeek:

It works just fine, the file you have to open is install.xml ;)

The Dynamic sig is a .php file, right?

Create a custom BBcode that is exactly the same as the image tags and phpBB3 will allow the .php file to be used as an image.

I used this for my sig rotator on a few forums. 8-)

My name isn’t Handyman, and no, it doesn’t hog the server. ;)

You don't have to be called Handyman to be a handyman :P

Reminds me of "Surely you can't be serious"... "I am serious, and don’t call me Surely". :P

Nice mod, to bad i had to remove it.
Because of the SEO-MOD i installed it had numerous error messages, and the log grew to a whopping 500MB in 1 day ! My hosting did not like this ;)

Perhaps in a next release you could set a size limit ;)

That sounds good, but you could also:
  1. Fix those errors
  2. Clear out the log periodically, like I do when errors are fixed
