[RC] Snow on Forum Index 1.0.0

Post by Tophon » Mon Nov 17, 2008 4:07 pm

A simple trick to get some snow on your Forum Home page this Christmas/Winter but thought I'd package it up as a mod for ease. Credit for source code goes to Dynamic Drive. I just edited it for phpBB3 use.

I was originally going to use this on my phpBB3 Christmas style but decided not to and to release as an optional add-on.

MOD title: Snow on Index
Author: Tophon
MOD version: 1.0.0
MOD description: Adds falling Snow on your phpBB3 Forum Index Page.

phpBB version: phpBB 3.0.0 to 3.0.3
phpBB styles: prosilver and subsilver2 (also works on all other styles)
phpBB languages: English
MOD Demo: Live Demo
Mod Download: Download

Thanks a lot Tophon!

The parameter "pageheight" seems not work, flakes disappear always at the end of the window (then we have no more flakes when we scroll down it). Tested on Firefox 3.0.4, Opera 9.62, Chrome 0.4.154.25 and Internet Explorer 6, that shows a javascript error telling about an "undefined variable pageheight".

Any suggestion? Thanks in advance! :)

I am not too sure on that, it seems fine in the browsers I tested it on, maybe it could be something to do with the style it's used with?
I know what you mean about the flakes ending at the top of page footer, but I think it looks ok as it snows over forum categories dropping in from the top. It can be added within overall_header to snow on every page, but I purposely only put the instrucs for index_body. I think it is welcoming for guests and members just there and won't interfere with browsing or posting within forums. It may start to get on peoples nerves on every page on adding to overall_header.

Mr_makaveli: It's real simple to add and take off again.

Thanks for reply!

That happens to me viewing your site, too: :?

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3402/flakesqm4.jpg

That screen refers to a 1280x1024 resolution, if I scale on 1024x768 the ending-line is obviously higher (near the login section). That's strange, may it depend on S.O? Mine is Windows XP Pro SP3.
About where to show the flakes, I also think it's better to do it only in the index page as you made. ;)

Many thanks for this mod! :D

Question though...I would like to use the above issues to my benefit :D

Is there any way to make it so the snow only falls within a certain top portion of the website?

For example, on my site http://tucsondrivers.com/index.php I want the snow to only fall on the top-grey area where you see the site logo / name / description...is this possible?

Thanks for the reply!

I opened up the snow.js file and there was an option as to how far the snow should fall...e.g. "pageheight" or "windowheight" -- I know very little about java so was wondering if one could input numerical values ? I will try it!
