[Beta] CASPER - phpBB3 Drop-in CAPTCHA mod.

Post by zaphodb777 » Sun Feb 22, 2009 7:08 am

Modification Name: CASPER
Author: zaphodb777

Modification Description:: Drop in CAPTCHA mod
Modification Version:: 0.0.1

Requirements: Eventually will require client browser to have flash installed. Currently requires no browser plug-ins.

Demo URL: http://www.spambotsecurity.com/forum/uc ... e=register

Modification Download: http://www.spambotsecurity.com/casper.php

This mod is in development now, and eventually will peel away from being just a CAPTCHA hack. Basically, it seeks to move CAPTCHA into the 4th dimension (time) to where bot registrations, simply due to the nature of the beast, will become a thing of the past. It also seeks to restore ease of use to almost pre-CAPTCHA days of yore.

Currently, however, it is just a port of my backscatter CAPTCHA mod (hack?) for phpBB2. The important thing is, for all it's ugliness, it still has a 100% botless history for nearly a year. I know a few people have allready experessed interest in that.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Mike :)

If you're planning to try this replacement, after replacing the includes/captcha/captcha_non_gd.php file to enable the new one you'll need to disable the GD CAPTCHA.

ACP -> Visual confirmation settings -> GD CAPTCHA: -> NO

It's amazing how many robots have hit the actually live demo page since I put that link up. Fun to watch.

If any of you download this script, please after a couple of weeks share your experience. I need the feedback.

Just wanted to say that the image at the demo might be a little larger than the script I am distributing...

The script uses the same size image as the original to keep from breaking templates.

The one on my site I was just messing with, expanding the bit-field. Does anyone know of a template that would be broken by 790px wide? If not, maybe I should release it, as it helps to further "needle in a hackstack" the image.

So far so good. :D

I administer three phpBB3 boards and two of these were being constantly hit by dodgy registrations. After installing this replacement CAPTCHA on those two boards BOT registrations have dropped to nil.

In the last couple of days the third board finally showed signs of being hit as well so I relented and installed the MOD there tonight.

I expect that sometime the BOT authors will figure out the difference but for now I figure that there's plenty of softer targets out there so the script kiddies might allow me some peace.

FWIW, I can't read the darn thing on your test link. Probably because I'm geriatric or something.

I said it was ugly. But it's effective too. Your eyes, and monitor must have keen focus (or be running in native resolution for a LCD... I hate LCDs), to be able to see, and percieve the letters caused by antagonistic triggering of the of the neurons in your visual cortex.

I will repeat some of what was said long ago about this when it was just a mod for phpBB2...

This captcha works via an optical illusion. The letters aren't really there, they are generated in your mind by a wave phenomenon that causes neurons to get "tired", or shall I say, drained of charge. It is quite akin to this illusion from wikimedia.

Image

The black dots aren't really there, they are being generated in your mind.

So yes, I could see why that would bother some visually impaired people. But it is the only way I could figure out with a static image, how to generate something robots couldn't see, and that is to use the faults of the human mind to my advantage.

Sure, most of the code isn't mine at all. It is after all the stock captcha with some tweaking, but the devil is in the approach.

My recommendation is to always provide an e-mail link of some sort for those who can't see the pattern. At least with phpBB, it's a one-time thing. And in consideration of that, shouldn't the admittance to the club be a bit tough?

Zap :)

Edit: P.S. As a bit of trivia, you can thank my Timex/Sinclair 1000 of long ago, where I first developed this technique after seeing something in a kalidescope pattern. Of course, you had to be across the room to see it with the huge quarter character pixels, but that's where this came from. :D

I think that is a no-no, winds of change implie new things... not a back-port of sort. IMHO.

Okay, am I the only one who misses what he is saying?

I honestly can't see how effectiveness equates to a no-no.

He lost me too. Sometimes tried'n'true just works.

As for new users not being able to read CASPER I haven't seen a dropoff in real user registrations yet. All three boards also offer alternative contact means and I haven't yet seen a complaint.

Just wondering if anyone else is using this and if so, what are your findings?

I still haven't seen a bogus registration in any one of the three phpBB 3 boards I administer that are using this.
