I don't agree here, it should be reasonably readable for humans. If I have to try that hard to read a captcha I won't register on the site. Captcha's are evil and should case as little difficulties for your users to solve them.
It will be easy for spambots no matter what you come up with once it is implemented on a large scale.

Yes, and once you can teach a computer to see Illusions this may be a problem.

BTW, I am using the hardest version right now. all 3 versions are visible on http://www.spambotsecurity.com/casper.php . Perhaps I will downgrade for awhile.

Zap.

Edit: Just moved back to version 1.

Actually, that sounded real snooty of me, sorry.

Yes, I agree, CAPTCHAs are evil, but, sadly, a neccessary evil.

My theory is, that version 3 of this captcha would be impossible for a non-human to decode, it may be a bit tough for humans, but someone who didn't want to solve it, probably didn't want to post either.

I do have in the main part of the site a contact page, where someone who just can't do it (I have one friend who can't) can just mail me up, give me their chosen username, and password, and I would manually add them in. I don't find this a pain. Manually adding 1 user, is alot easier than manually deleting 2 spams.

Much more readable now... :)
Maybe you should upgrade it whenever spambots are able to break the current version, I didn't mind the second too much.

In fact, each time I read your CAPTCHA I'm finding it easier to read. Maybe it just takes a bit getting used to.

Cool... Neural training, something non-neural nets can't EVEN hope to do. As I said, this "effect" is dependent on a biological brain.

Give the possibility to be able to listen to Casper's, so Level 3 can be used forever.

And by the way, why no one has created a Captcha just with sounds?

Voice recognition is why. They have allready had to fuzz the audio captures to the point only a careful ear can hear them.

I am sorry to report, due to a lack of interest, and an inherent unusability with LCD monitors, the backscatter mod for phpbb3 (the beginning stages of CASPER) are no longer supported.

I am also sorry to report, that due to my work with ZB Block (my php site protection/anti-spam wrapper) taking all my time, I have not had any time to devote to CASPER (so this project is virtually graveyarded.)

However, as the program was supposed to be GPL, I invite the community here to make a time-based CAPTCHA that was along CASPER's lines. (That being a fairly simple CAPTCHA, obfuscated by a moving blank-spot to avoid screen grabs working with OCR). Perhaps it would have been a shockwave-flash that would also have detected if it was being framed by a fraudulent solver scheme.

For those of you who would wish to use an eaiser to solve captcha (such as the one provided with phpBB), but still have fairly good protection, please give ZB Block a whirl.

Zap :)

P.S. I would enter ZB Block as a mod on this site, except for the fact it works with any php script, and is neither phpBB specific, nor installable as a classic mod.(requires an edit of common.php to make it work)

Lucky I have dual monitors which are not the same so I could see some on one monitor and the unseen on the other monitor. I can see why bots have not broken this, but how many visually impared like myself have dual (unmatched) monitors? BTW: my first attempt failed for it said I got it incorrect, but the second pattern passed. I used lower case for the first one but uppercase for the second attempt. :ugeek:

I actually removed my own mod from my forums, so the CAPTCHA you see on http://www.spambotsecurity.com/forum is now is the default one that ships with with phpBB. The only thing between me and the spammers now is ZB Block, still very effective.

The one on the phpBB2 site back at http://zaphodb777.dyndns.org/forum , my personal, much neglected site, is the backscatter captcha, but I don't use that forum for anything anymore, I don't have time.

The project may be dead for now, but, someday when ZB Block isn't eating my life, it may rise from the grave and dance through the streets again.
