[Beta] Sphinx search for phpBB 1.0.beta2

Post by naderman »

MOD Title: Sphinx for phpBB
MOD Description: A search plugin that allows phpBB to use the Sphinx search engine as a backend. See http://www.sphinxsearch.com for information on Sphinx. Sphinx is much more scalable than the phpBB built-in search which makes it ideal for very large boards. phpBB.com itself is using this search backend for the forum search. It supports a superior query syntax and many other features!
Currently only the combination of Linux, MySQL and Sphinx 0.9.8 or 0.9.8.1 is supported.
MOD Version: none yet

MOD Download: Download page: https://github.com/phpbb/sphinx-for-phpbb/releases
Git: http://github.com/phpbb/sphinx-for-phpbb
Last Stable version:

Demo Board: http://www.phpbb.com

What is 3.2?? The latest version is 3.0.0 Gold and there are no other upcoming releases that i know of.

In regards to the MOD, so I take it its an alternative to using your own search engine? If so then I would love something like this, I have our search disabled because I find the tables just get too damn big in size after a while, I was having to empty them out regularly.

Currently it is 3.1 and codenamed "Ascraeus", when released it will be phpBB 3.2
Development is already well underway for 3.2, we discuss a bit about 3.2 features on the phpBB Weekly podcast. -- you can also find the SVN Repository for the development of 3.2 in the code forge (linked in Nils' first post) :)

The 3.0.1 release will also come forward soon, and includes a list of bug fixes. :)

A BIG thank you to Nils for making this project available. :D

Right now it's a plugin you can easily add to your phpBB3.0 without any code changes. It will probably also be included in 3.2 by default, yes.

Is that correct and if so can I assume the the forum and topic searches are using it?

Well phpbb.com is using sphinx but it's not the latest version of my plugin it will be updated in the next few days. Another demo board would be forum.joomla.org which actually runs the latest version right now.

There'll be a download for the first beta release, right now there's only SVN.
