+500 forums = overheated forums table?

Post by stokerpiller » Sun Apr 25, 2010 7:42 am

Hello,

I have a link collection and I want to include it in phpBB.
The collection has 500 - 1000 links.

The plan is to put these links in categories and extraxt 1 category per custom page.
I have a couple of questions:

1. Will the forums tabel get overheated with + 500 forums?
2. How to add 2 more forum descriptions with the same functions as the existing forum description?
3. How do I extract a specific category from rhe forums table and display it on a custom page?

Hope somebody has the time to help me on this one :)

No feedback?

At this moment question 1 is the most important.

The table itself will be fine.

Without actually testing I suspect the most likely issue performance-wise is going to be rendering a list of 500 forums in php code. Depending on your board a list of that many forums may also take a noticeable part of overall page size.

Why don't you try it on a test board and see what happens?

Making a testboard with 500 link forums are going to take some time.

I am not going to extract all 500 forums on the same pages. Max 70.
The plan was to create several categories and extract one category per custom page.

So, you want to have approx. 7 categories with 70 forums in each category?

What kind of hardware do you have serving your board?

It would take forever to load over 500+ categories. The size of the site would have over some megabyte. Don't you have an another idea?

No, I am going to have about 10 categories and the largest category will have 70 forums.
This means that MAX extract is 70 forums.

My hardware is:
Opteron™ 1354, Quad-Core 64 Bit, 4x 2,2 GHz
6 GB DDR2-RAM

Shouldn't be relevant for anything else that visitor count though.

Okay, but it would load a litte bit after all.

I don't think that would make an overload of the forums table, but mhh... :?

btw... you need really long to scroll to the bottom

500+ forums could be a potential issue for the software itself; phpbb3 was simply not built to handle that volume of forums. The permission system would basically break down with that many forums, and for what? a bunch of links? It's just seems to be a really inefficient way to display a collection of links.

What I suggest is create a custom table and a custom page to store and display links respectively, which would allow it to be separate from phpBB in the way of forums. You can still track clicks and set up custom auths if you wish.

I maintain a board with approximately 500 forums and it is on a regular shared hosting account. There have not been any problems with the basic running of the board. The only problems there have been is when moving forums around. Sometimes when moving a forum, it can make a mess of the forum tree and you will need to rebuild it.

I was facing a similar setup in an old development release of my forum. It was a huge development project, and it turned out that it was much better to use a custom-made page to handle the task I needed. I concur with SyntaxError90's suggestion above.

Yes, well, the thing is that phpBB almost have what I need for this.
I just need to add two more descriptions to the forums table.
Then create all the forums in their respective categories, they would all be hidden.
Last step is the create a custom page and extract each forum category, permissions not considered.

I do like the idea of creating a new module for this, but then I will be missing the click tracker and generally it would mean much more work and in the end probably be the death of the project.

Right now I have the link-farm part hardcoded in the templates. It is working perfect, but ACP config would be better and most of all I miss the click tracker.

I'm running over 500 forums on my own website. Haven't experienced any problems with it at all. I even have guest posting enabled in all forums.

Do you have your own server?
Do you run a forum with 500 forums or 500 forums on your site? It's a little bit confusing.

And your enabled guest post is just because of the captcha, right?

No, I host with a server in Canada.

Yes, I use a photo identifying capture for guests. A user can create a topic in any forum by simply clicking new topic and identifying the difference between images in a set of 6. Registration I go 8 (2x4). I get no (rarely) spambots, and yes I have 500+ forums layed out with sub forums of the index's main category's.

Here's a hint. Your not gonna get participation in ALL of the forums, so 500+ really isn't the right way to go.

The only reason I do it, is because I am using an older UBB styled theme/previous website to my site that necessitates 500+ forums.

I mean, don't get me wrong, the site runs absolutely GREAT, with 500+ forums to contend with, but I honestly wouldn't recommend it if your trying to increase participation.
