So what's your opinion on trying to mess with their permissions?

I do not understand the question?
What does "mess" mean? You would handle the Bots permissions just like any other group...

Sorry, I mean change the permissions so that the Google webcrawler is allowed to access the posts the way a user does rather than as a guest.

As I said, you can give the Bots group any permissions you like, just as any other group.

Ok, but if I give the bots access to posts as if they were regular members than anyone using Google search would have access to that information, correct? I probably don't want to do that.

Yes. There's no black magic the crawlers are using. Google, Yahoo!, 百度, Bing, Яндекс and others will follow every link and capture what they "see". If they see a "this topic does not exist" it is captured aswell (captured, not understood). In fact, some of them already do so since they can't be detected as bots and so guest permissions apply to them.

As a rule of thumb: handle guests and bots the same way - if you don't want bots to see some of your forums, deny them for guests aswell. And vice versa. If you want guests to be able to read forums, don't forget to allow those for bots aswell.

Thank you very much for your most helpful reply, especially your insight into the bots vs. guest permissions.
