Support for the actual MOD should be provided by the MOD author. You should post your question in the support section of tha MOD.
Support Toolkit | Support Request Template | Knowledge Base | phpBB 3.0.x documentation
I don't give support via PM or IM! (all unsolicited pms will be trashed!)

Are there any potential problems by using automod? Or is it just the fact that you can't see the plain text modifications?

Your site is directly in the root, so using an ftp client like filezilla it's in public_html folder or htdocs folder. You'll see a list of folders and files - adm, cache, docs, download etc etc

Why do I only see a blank page whe nI try to open install.xml?

I have tried a few different mods on my Mac and Safara, Windows with booth Chrome and IE9.
If I try the 1.2.5 sample from https://www.phpbb.com/mods/modx it looks good but if I download the 1.2.5 quickstart and then the sample to the same folder and try to open the xml I still get a blank page.

Use the MODX Creator to create your XML file. Then download the modx.prosilver.en.xsl from that same page and put it in the same directory where your XML files is. Then it should work.
Need a mod/extension created/installed, other custom-coded solution or a server admin? https://tumba25.net

Thank you! If I import the install.xml and then press view I can read the xml just fine.
But if I download the xml, modx.prosilver.en.xsl & Download GPLv2 license and open install_mod.xml locally I still get a blank page?

However, the advice you gave with MODX Converter is good enough. It makes it easier to install the mod then having to read the install as a raw xml. :)

You need to put the modx.prosilver.en.xsl and the install.xml in the same folder on your hd before opening the install.xml with your (any) browser.

Am on a Mac also and can't open the install_mod.xml - getting a blank page.
Used the MODX Creator as discussed above and still get a blank page. Wonder has anyone a solution to this problem.

Thanks

Update: Downloaded Firefox for Mac and it works fine :D but doesn't work on Chrome or Safari

Chrome doesn't read xml files. You'll need a chrome extension for that.

Use a full feature browser like Firefox or IE9.

Thanks Sajaki for the link, my MAC is new as I had always used a windows machine. I downloaded Firefox before you posted and it opened the .xmlfile straight out of the box. I had searched Google but didn't realize Chrome needs an extension - good to know.

Is there somewhere for requesting future changes to the MODX format? In particular I'd like the ability to mark <open> tags with some kind of "if-exists" condition, so that my mod can include support for other mods without throwing up errors on vanilla phpBB installations.

Currently I'm not sure how best to add such conditions otherwise.
