organize Sub-Forums

Post by St0ney »

Hey Guys:

Just installed PhpBB - and I'm currently Setting up my Board/Community.

I LOVE the fact that we can add Sub-Forums.
But it would be great if they could be Organized in "Columns"

instead of a straight line going across.

example:

If there is a Mod out there that can do this already, please let me know.
I did do a search First and came up empty.

Thanks Much

A mod is not required here. This is styling issue. So far, I don't think there is a style that does that by default so you may have to get your hands dirty ;) . Phpbb3 already has all the coding done for that so here goes nothing:
OPEN: styles/prosilver/template/forumlist_body.html
FIND:

Code: Select all

					<!-- IF forumrow.SUBFORUMS and forumrow.S_LIST_SUBFORUMS --><br /><strong>{forumrow.L_SUBFORUM_STR}</strong> {forumrow.SUBFORUMS}<!-- ENDIF -->
REPLACE:

Code: Select all

					<!-- IF forumrow.SUBFORUMS and forumrow.S_LIST_SUBFORUMS -->
						<br /><strong>{forumrow.L_SUBFORUM_STR}</strong><br />
						<div style="float: right; width: 90%">
						<!-- BEGIN subforum -->
							<div style="width: 32%; margin: 0.5%; display: block; float: left;">
							<!-- IF forumrow.subforum.S_UNREAD -->
								<a href="{forumrow.subforum.U_SUBFORUM}" class="subforum unread" title="{L_NEW_POSTS}">{forumrow.subforum.SUBFORUM_NAME}</a>
							<!-- ELSE -->
								<a href="{forumrow.subforum.U_SUBFORUM}" class="subforum read" title="{L_NO_NEW_POSTS}">{forumrow.subforum.SUBFORUM_NAME}</a>
							<!-- ENDIF -->
							</div>
							<!-- IF (forumrow.subforum.S_ROW_COUNT % 3) eq 2 --><div class="clear"></div><!-- ENDIF -->
						<!-- END subforum -->
						</div>
					<!-- ENDIF -->
Normally we would try to avoid replacing any phpbb code but because prosilver was not designed to do this there's no way you can accomplish this without replace its code, unless you're creating a new style that displays subforums this way.

This can certainly be improved upon by using css classes rather than inline css. Hope this helped.

Blitze :

Thank you So much !
So simple and Worked like a charm.

I'm a newb to phpbb (boards) (downloaded / installed) just two days ago
Proof is in the pudding, after I made the one suggested change,
I hit refresh on the browser and was like (Shoot) <----- Lack of a better Word :lol:

Then I found the refresh template in ACP and Bamm :D

Again thanks for taking the time to answer my post.

Here the subsforums on my DRAFT Board.

Really makes the bottom of the board look so much better.

Cool. Glad you were able to get it working. That does look good, especially if you have a lot of subforums.
One is glad to be of service :)

Hello Blitze,

I've a little problem regarding the width or the space between subforums.

Please take a look here to know what I am talking about, it is for the hardware forum where you can find that the sub forums are overlapping each others because I have some how long name to avoid having too many subforums.

Please how can I set it correctly?

Thanks

why you cant stay in your own thread or in a thread that matches what you want...?

in this thread we speak about organizing subforums and not the width bla bla...

go in styles section... :twisted:

Hello mate,
Thanks for pointing this out to me because I think both of us (me & you) did the same mistake by posting something that may seem that is not related to topic subject.
For me I've posted here because:
1 - I thought to use search and find a suitable topic to post under would be best instead of adding a new topic while a previously one already exist, I think the topic mentioned that it is applied for prosilver only while you asked for subsilver.
2 - This way for organizing the subforums did not mentioned else where except for this topic so if I've started a new topic as you suggested my friend I will refer to this topic, and this is my 2nd reason for posting here.
3 - I think as far as I know that board rules stated clearly that Members are asked to not act as “back seat moderators”, so it is not my turn or yours to do so my friend.

Thanks and I hope that we go back to our topic subject :).

Thanks

Hi MGadAllah,

sorry for getting back with you so late. Unfortunately, like I mentioned earlier on, CSS (designing) is really not one of my strengths :cry:. But I will take a look and see if I can help. I don't know what the expected behavior would be as I was only working with the idea proposed in the first post. It would be great to see a site where this is implemented correctly. My thought would be:
- this should only be used on forums with several (more than, say, 3 or 4) sub-forums per forum
- the sub-forum names should be short or perhaps, instead of three columns, 2 columns will be better
- maybe sub-forums with long names should wrap (white-space)
- etc.

I will also look at subsilver when I get the time. Haven't worked with subsilver since beta 1 though :mrgreen:
