Smilie categorization

Post by DarsVaeda »

goal:
- sort smilies in a way so even a lot of usable smilies are hand able.
- optional?: you don't need to activate php for templates to get this to work

idea:
in acp->posts->smilies a form is provided to manage different folder(s)(names), those are stored in the database.
in smilies options dialogue you can select a folder for each smilie.
in the "view more smilies" popup those folders are show and beneth the smilies you sorted in.

additional:
i did this as a tryout just with file-functions from php, but i image this would be much too slow online.
and i had to activate php in templates...

phpBB3 has been feature locked for quite a while.

It shoulds like a slightly long winded way of doing it imo.

You can currently order the smilies very easily in the admin panel. You can also choose which ones of those are displayed next to the post window. So you can arrange them into groups and choose the top few from each group to show up anyway.

why do you tell me, that phpbb is feature locked? this is a mod request.

lets say i have 100 smilies to choose from.
imagine the time the smilies-popup to load, besides the long scroll time it needs and so on.
its just nice to have a list like:
funny
angry
love
...
and so on to choose from ;)

Sorry, force of habit :)

I see where you're coming from but i just wonder if that adds an extra step your users won't want. They'll probably just type shortcuts like : )

I'll bet out of 100 smilies your users only regularly use less than 30 of them. Probably less than 15 in fact.

Hi DarsVaeda,

for phpBB2 this MOD already exists. It´s called Smilies Categories MOD. Maybe there is a little hope for us:

http://mods.afkamm.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=681

But don´t forget that Olympus is still not even officially released. So don´t be too impatient.

Wolfgang

The users on my forum would also appreciate a mod like this. Thank you to anyone with the know-how and time to do it!

Yes, Afkamm's Smilies Categories MOD for phpBB-2 is really great. :)
Kevin Clark wrote:I'll bet out of 100 smilies your users only regularly use less than 30 of them. Probably less than 15 in fact.
I have a current statistic regarding the smilies of one of my boards. I've got over 200 smilies there but only 161 have been used at least one time.

My top smiley has been used 686 times, the second popular smiley has been used 397 times.

10. popular smiley: used 145 times
20. popular smiley: used 68 times
30. popular smiley: used 22 times
40. popular smiley: used 13 times
50. popular smiley: used 8 times

Smiley number 93 (and above) has only been used 3 times or less (beginning with smiley number 108.)

So when I upgrade to Olympus I will surely reduce the number of smilies on my board. But I still want the Smilies Categories MOD for Olympus! ;)

The goal for the users will be, that they can choose the kind of smilies that they want to use. I have different kind of smilies that all have give the same expression. Like :P also in 3d or blue or flat, and so on with the others. Every person should be able to set his or her favorite smilies set where they can choose from. Maybe this should be an option in the mod, that the users smilies can be saved on to the board and that they can make their own category.

I have found out, that there is already an smiley categorization mod. Build into WYSIWYG Hot Editor for phpBB3

I would say, try this mod, but be carefull, this mod doesnt work together with Quickreply. When you installed both these mods, you will always get a "message to short error". I use Stargate's build in Quickreply instead.

I hope that this is what you searched for.

Hi JBosman,

thanks for the info! Could you please give us a testuser for your board? Because at the demoboard at ecardmax.com I do not see a smilies categories feature.

Thank you!

Yes but the solution is not good at all, as it is a very heavy mod and it is not compatible with a lot of mod's. So we need a simple category or My preference is to add a page number at the bottom as I will not add 1000 of smilies , a page number to go to next page will be enough for me.

Thanks :)

I would like a normal smilie categorization-mod too.

HotEditor looks nice, but Smilies are inserted via img-tags.
