Alternative Display name to Login name?

Hi

One of my users jsut asked this:
Most forums I have been in you can have a login name, and a forum nick name. I do not want people to be able to see my log in name, theirfor need a nickname.

In SMF forum they have 2 settings, that are:
Username: <myUserName>
Name: <myDisplayName>
This is the displayed name that people will see. (so my name displays as <myDisplayName> and not <myUserName>
Is that possible with standard phpBB3?

Cheers

No, this is not a feature of phpBB3 :) you would need a mod of some kind.

You could add that though, by using the Custom Profile Field.
Have the <!--if custom profile field eq. customname --> something like that, you could replace the {S_USERNAME} with that, and it be the custom one.

I think I understand what you mean, but where would {S_USERNAME} be found? And what do I replace it with... what is the custom profile field named?

I attempted this, and I must be doing it wrong, because on view post it is showing the currently logged in user's displayname not the posters display name. Where in the code does it store information into the database on posts? I have looked through all the files I thought dealt with posting and have not found it yet, if someone can point me to where the sql add code is for posting maybe I can get this to work and than post what I've done.

xceler8shun's MOD is great, too bad is not allowing duplicates. :)

I have suggested in other threads the possibility to allow two users sharing the same displayed name (clones), like the "Real Name MOD" from phpBB 2 was doing. There is also another good idea that I never saw available before - the ability for you to change the displayed name of others. So, even if the user B keeps changing his nickname dozen times, the user A will always see him as "user B". All the other users will see his modifications, if they didn't enabled this option.
