Hi

I've a style that has been downloaded since a while and a new version is out now for this style.

How to update this style to the latest version?

Is it to uninstall the current one 1st? OR to overwrite existing files?

Please help me with this issue and tell me steps for the right option.

Thanks,
Mohamed

Just overwrite all files. Remember to refresh template / themes / imageset and purge the cache after. Doing this "flushes" out your old style files and replaces it with new ones.

Note: If you have any MOD's installed that affect your original style files, you will need to re-apply the code edits to the new files before uploading then to your webspace styles folder.

Hope that helps.

So I should not upload the .zip file ... and just extract it in my computer and then upload the files and do the replace, right!?

Thanks,
Mohamed

Yes, but... do you have any mods installed?
Because if you do have mods which made template edits, then you should know exactly which template edits are necessary in order to also apply them in the new version of your style...

Does the forum have to be closed from users before I do the refreshing and purging?

I'm having problems with PMs (white blank page), which may be because I haven't done the refreshing and purging.

You arnt doing any changes to the database so there should be no real need to close forum. Just upload then run a flush.

So I have to upload the style again?

When I purge the cache, should it be emptied completely or should I leave something there?

no, if you have already uploaded the new style files, then just delete everything from the cache folder except for the index.htm and the .htaccess files.

then, hold down the shift key and click the reload/refresh button in your browser and you should see the new files.

You must think I'm a total idiot, but I'm just a beginner and afraid of doing irreversible harm to the forum, that's why I'm double-checking:

Earlier I quoted an istruction to "Remember to refresh template / themes / imageset". I don't have to click Refresh inside the forum but instead do what Lumpy Burgertushie is saying above? And the right order is empty the cache, then refresh?

nobody thinks you are a total idiot or even a partial idot. :D

yes the order matters.

once you have cleared/purged/deleted the cache, then you have to refresh your browser to see the changes.

and, there is nothing you can do to the files on the server that can hurt your board so bad you can't recover it in just a few minutes.

all of the posts, members, forums, etc are in the database and that is totally separate from the files that you access in the ftp.

so, you could delete all of your files and not lose anything important.

luck,
robert

Hi again. :(

I performed procedures as follows:

1. in the /forum/language folder I uploaded the latest folder 'fi' replacing the old folder 'fi'

2. in the /forum/styles folder I uploaded the latest folder 'prosilver' replacing the old folder 'prosilver'

3. I emptied the /forum/cache folder leaving only index.htm (couldn't see .htaccess files)

4. I held down the shift key and clicked Refresh

5. I didn't see any new files?!! Should they appear in the /forum/cache folder?

Have I upgraded the style now? Should private messages work again? Is there a tutorial somewhere? When I upgraded from version 3.0.4 to 3.0.6 I followed the instructions provided by the automatic installation package and can't remember if I was instructed to upgrade the style.

I don't have a clue what you are doing.

when I answered you above, I thougt I was answering the original poster of this topic.

this topic was about upgrading a style, not about a problem with PMs or whatever.

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that I'm asking for details on how to update style, which is the topic of this thread.(I want to update style because PM's don't work after updating from 3.0.4 to 3.0.6.) I'm confused because I have received two kinds of instructions in this thread. That's why I'm asking for a tutorial (on how to update style). I have tried to find it myself but haven't found it yet.

A few days ago I started another thread and was asked by admins to "stick to one thread please". Please have patience with a newbie.
