Show Categories Only On Index Page

Post by evepowr » Wed Nov 18, 2009 5:28 am

So i have been raking my brain trying to achieve this. It was relatively simple with phpbb 2. What im after is a way to have ONLY the categories show on the main index page. I know that categories are now treated as forums but it should still be possible. I know there is a javascript way to make it so you can expand upon categories but im not after that and i want them all collapsed when someone enters the index page. So if you have any suggestions or have seen a mod i missed please be sure to tell me. Thank you to anyone that can save me from going insane trying to figure this one out hah.

so what would happen if you had this?

would you click on the category and then go to a new page that only has the forums listed for that category and then you would have to go back to the category page to access another page of forums?

seems like a lot of trouble to naviagate the site that way.

not sure what you are trying to accomplish with this.

Didnt see your reply till now but the reason i want this is i have a site with over 200 forums. If they are all displayed on the main page then people cant get around easily and click on what they want. If it only shows categories its much easier on them for the navigation part.

that is what I thought you really wanted.
here is a MOD that will collapse all the categories on the index page. then you can click them to open each one that you want.

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 0&t=699315

check out the demo site to see if it is what you want.

luck,
robert

actually I do belive that you can set them all closed and then whoever comes to the page will have to open the ones they want. That is the whole point of the MOD.

Old bump but still its not really what i want. Im after a way to just show the main index categories. I had it done on phpbb2. http://www.taultunleashed.com/phpbb2/index.php is an example of it. Then clicking on each one opens it up. If i use that other mod its still a heavy load on the server with all the areas we have.

I am looking for this same type of thing.
I see the only way to drop the inners is by making your Forums your categories and then hide your subs.
I would really like to be able to utilize the Categories though, it makes it look so much cleaner.

If there are any suggestions to this yet... would LOVE to know :)

Thanks!

Very old topic, and I am a new user of pphpbb.

Here is the answer I just found.

open index.php

find

Code: Select all

'S_DISPLAY_BIRTHDAY_LIST'	=> ($config['load_birthdays']) ? true : false,
add

Code: Select all

'S_INDEX_PAGE'                => true,
to create

Code: Select all

'S_DISPLAY_BIRTHDAY_LIST'	=> ($config['load_birthdays']) ? true : false,
'S_INDEX_PAGE'                => true,
then open forumlist_body.html

find

Code: Select all

			<ul class="topiclist forums">
	<!-- ENDIF -->

	<!-- IF not forumrow.S_IS_CAT -->
		<li class="row">
(this is on forumlist_body.html around lines 24-28 in my text editor)

and add

Code: Select all

<!-- IF not S_INDEX_PAGE-->
to create

Code: Select all

			<ul class="topiclist forums">
	<!-- ENDIF -->

	<!-- IF not forumrow.S_IS_CAT --><!-- IF not S_INDEX_PAGE-->
		<li class="row">
Then find the end-tag of

Code: Select all

<li class="row">
add after

Code: Select all

<!-- ENDIF -->
to create

Code: Select all

			</dl>
		</li>
    <!-- ENDIF -->
	<!-- ENDIF -->

	<!-- IF forumrow.S_LAST_ROW -->
			</ul>
(around line 58 in text editor)

Now you should only see the catagories on the index page.
As soon as you click on the catagory link you will get to te page with all the forums in that catagory.

Good luck
P.H.
