Confusion on combining styles and mods

Post by Leikn » Thu Feb 18, 2010 1:27 am

I am trying to figure out how to set up a board using a style and mods all downloads from this site.

If I install all the mods I want on prosilver, they all work.
If I install the style I want, a majority of the mods I want do not work.
I feel like I can either have plain old boards with a pretty style, or the mods I want.

Are they any easier ways to make a style work for a mod other than knowing how to edit code that doesn't match the file edits?

FYI I am using Automod and the details>style edit does not work. I'm trying to use avalon style and "topic solved" mod together. As well as wanting "phpbb calendar".

Anyone can point me in the right directions? I want my cake and eat it too.

honestly the best way I know of to style/mod is to simply know the code. Or atleast be able to read and understand it. The problem with coding is everyone has there own ways on how to code something. Course thats not always a bad thing.

if you wish to learn the code.. i can get you started there...

Code PhpBB uses (that i know):

depending on which aspect you like to be able to do.

For just being able to style you need to know CSS, HTML, maybe some Javascript.
For modding you need to know all of them really depending on what the mod is.
SQL you don't really need as much as the rest.

Wow, that really sucks that there are all these great mods for phpbb but if you don't know how to edit codes for different styles your stuck with headache inducing prosilver. I guess I'll go learn, but I was hoping it wouldn't take a year just to fix mods. I figured the styles on phpbb would all be compatible with automod compatible mods.

actually you do not need to know any of that to install MODs or styles.

most all styles are based on one of the two default styles for phpbb3;

most all MODs come with instructions to install it to both of those default styles.

so all you have to do is figure out which one of the default styles yours is based on and follow those instructions.

sometimes, you will find some instruction that you won't have the exact code for .

when that happens, you can either make a best guess and see what happens, or you can ask the MOD author and/or the style author for help with it.

keep in mind that the more styles you have installed , the harder it is to install MODs.

you should only install the MODs that your members really need/want and installing a bunch of styles is a mess. Most people will use whatever the default is anyway so offereing more than a couple of alternatives is just a waste of your time.

Find one style that you and your members like and just stick to that.

I'm baaaaaccckkkk. still doing work on donation basis. PM your needs.
