New style, do you interested?

Post by tuananhdnc »

As we know, phpBB 3.1 release date is near and we expect many changes from it. A problem is also causing many comments is remove Subsilver2 style.
As a fan of phpBB, of course I hope all the changes are good.
Subsilver2 too old and not with the trend of modern web design, Prosilver so good but not everyone likes it (at least me).
With years of professional experience in website design, I'm trying to build a completely new style for phpBB. I also know it will not be recognized as a style is supported at phpbb.com.
But I think some people will be interested in it, and if is you i'm hope get comment about it from you.
Some main features I will building:
+ Tabless and easy using (You may think it is a rip version of VBB, IBP ... but the truth is not so, i'm reference only and try to build a layout most familiar)
+ Valid XHTML/CSS, limited overlapping tags in coding, SEO friendly.
+ Improving page load speeds using techniques optimized images, CSS, JavaScripts. I'm trying to reach 90 points YSlow, 9x/100 Google Page Speed.
+ Division components, easily create custom styles based on it (Just make the changes in the CSS file and some files)
+ Work fine with IE all versions from IE6, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera...
...and more features in progress.
Estimated time for completion in late September and compatible with phpBB3.0.7, of course will support phpBB 3.1 when it release.
Once completed, I will apply this style for my clients. In cases where many people are interested and want to use, I'm willing to release it and with the supports.
I really want to know your opinion, sorry for my bad English.

Here is some screenshots from my PC ( all in progress and may be changed in release )

I quite like it - it's simple, clean, nice neutral colours.

Would be a good starter style from what I can see in the screenshots, any chance we can get a demo?

There's a similar "ground-up" style being developed here. The thing is that the MODs that the MODding community have to offer make phpBB a very attractive bulletin board solution (on top of what is already a very attractive system). The problem with that is MOD authors write their instructions based on either Prosilver or Subsilver2, so when you take those style bases away and replace it with a completely new code-base, AutoMOD is not going to be able to perform the style edits and doing the manual edits is going to be very tricky. Especially for those users who don't mind copy/pasting from a MODX xml instruction file, but don't have sufficient xHTML / CSS knowledge to compromise those instructions to match your style.

So whilst the idea of creating a standards compliant, new, fresh, SEO Friendly style seems appealing, I guess the question is are you willing to sacrifice all that time developing it but nobody using it because it can't be MODded easily.

For what it's worth I think the style does look nice, and would be successful if you based it on Prosilver and released it to the customisations database. But as a completely new ground-up style I don't see it being practical.

Anyway, best of luck whatever you choose to do :)

I'm trying to give a live demo as soon as possible.

I understand everything you say, but I think that's not a big problem if this style is most favorite style.
I can open a support forum for users, assuming no MOD installation instructions for this style, but I and many others are ready to create it. Of course not all of the phpBB MOD, but would be "on user's demand". To increase the number of users, MOD authors may also want to support it.
Of course I can do on Prosilver, but with many changes AutoMOD may be not valid
Start a new things is very difficult, but I do not think no one will use it and i'm wasting times, least my clients will want use it :)

With that way of think, we will be stucked on prosilver for ever. Need a change, soon of later, better soon.

Automod never was usefull for styles changes, at least that you use prosilver (who use the standard prosilver in a live forum? almost nobody) or a VERY similar (prosilver with other colours..).
Automod is usefull for code changes only.

@tuananhdnc keep doing your project, i think that have a great future. People is tired of prosilver.

This is basically copying the vB4 default style with some minor changes, as a vBulletin styles designer I can tell you that it is a genuine pleasure being able to work with prosilver based styles for a change, the vB4 default style is horrid to work with. In all honesty I cannot fathom why anyone would want phpBB3 to look like a carbon copy of vBulletin's new default style for vB4.
Just my view of course. :)

I'm said in my post:
all in progress and may be changed in release
I also do not want my style look like Vbulletin or any other skin, if you want I can show to you the way I coding it. I'm sure it's clean and optimize more than VBB.
And you can view this post to get more infomation http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... #p12839694
Maybe I have another question for you, why would anyone think that when a style is somewhat similar to VBB also considered a copy of it? No one can design a form similar except vBulletin Solutions?
That makes me think about iPhone, any new model from HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, RIM ... were brought comparisons with the iPhone despite the problems encountered. It was funny, while each product has specific characteristics and using different users.

Here example for you:

My style forumlist coding:

Code: Select all

		<div class="header">
			<h2><a href="#">You first category</a></h2>
			<img src="{T_THEME_PATH}/images/collapse.gif" alt="" />
		</div>
		<div class="subheader">
			<p>Description of your first category</p>
		</div>
		<ul class="table">
			<li class="tr alt1">
				<div class="td forumrow" style="background-image: url('styles/newfocus/imageset/forum_read_subforum.png');" title="No new post">
					<div class="foruminfo">
						<h2><a href="viewforum.php?f=2">Your first forum</a></h2>
						<p>Description of your first forum.</p>
					</div>
				</div>
				<div class="td forumstats">
					<p>Topics: 123</p>
					<p>Posts: 456</p>
				</div>
				<div class="td forumlastpost">
					<p>Last post by <a href="memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=53">ascraeus</a></p>
					<p>in <a href="viewtopic.php?t=1">NewFocus 1.0 release</a></p>
					<p>Fri Aug 06, 2010 9:25 am</p>
				</div>
			</li>
		</ul>
And result in web browser:

VBB4's skin coding:

Code: Select all

<ol class="floatcontainer" id="forums">
	<li id="cat1" class="forumbit_nopost L1">
		<div class="forumhead foruminfo L1 collapse">
			<h2>
				<span class="forumtitle"><a href="forumdisplay.php?1-Main-Category">Main Category</a></span>
				<span class="forumlastpost">Last Post</span>
				<a href="forum.php#top" id="collapse_c_cat1" class="collapse"><img title="Collapse this Category" alt="" src="images/buttons/collapse_40b.png"></a>
			</h2>
			<div class="forumrowdata">
				<p class="subforumdescription">Main Category Description</p>
			</div>
		</div>
		<ol class="childforum" id="c_cat1">
			<li class="forumbit_post L2" id="forum2">
				<div class="forumrow table">
					<div class="foruminfo td">
						<img alt="" id="forum_statusicon_2" class="forumicon" src="images/statusicon/forum_old-48.png">

							</div>
						</div>
					</div>
					<h4 class="nocss_label">Forum Statistics:</h4>
					<ul class="forumstats td">
						<li>Threads: 1</li>
						<li>Posts: 1</li>
					</ul>
					<div class="forumlastpost td">
						<h4 class="lastpostlabel">Last Post:</h4>
						<div>
							<p class="lastposttitle">
								<a class="threadtitle" href="showthread.php?1-Welcome-to-VBB4&goto=newpost">Welcome to VBB4</a>
								<a href="showthread.php?1-Welcome-to-VBB4&p=1#post1"><img alt="Go to last post" src="images/buttons/lastpost-right.png" title="Go to last post"></a>
							</p>
							<div class="lastpostby">
								by <div class="popupmenu memberaction" id="yui-gen9"><a title="focus is offline" href="member.php?1-focus" class="username offline popupctrl" id="yui-gen11"><strong>focus</strong></a></div>

As a coder or professional user, which better?

@mandrake88: I was up to the difficulties may be encountered.
But I feel very happy because there are many who love it.
Issues such as AutoMOD, install MOD can be solved with a forum, professional user help newbie user. Life changes when we change.

Why you don't tie up with PreBB there??
I think it will be better for both of you, where you can develop awesome theme :roll:

And for the future of your theme, I can suggest as I did in the other theme:

I suggest you start build up a team ... Where will help you in:
1- Continues development
2- Support users
3- Enhance your theme with modifications
4- Help in applying phpBB3 mods with your theme
5- Creating CHILD themes
6- Add other languages support
7- Making sure your theme will live for ever ;)

waiting for your theme release :)
