Updating a style by autmod

Post by TheMoustic »

Good evening everybody!

I would like to know if there any xml sheet of the modifications we need to apply to upgrade a style? Because in that way it would be possible to upgrade a style automatically by Automod for example. Moreover, the xml file is really better than the txt file thanks to color code for actions (green for add after, red for replace and purple for add before) and the possibility to select the code by on-click.

Thank you for your answers ;)

once you have a MOD installed to the standard styles you can go back to automod and click on the details link for the MOD in question.

down at the bottom of the page is a place where you can try to apply the changes to your other styles.

in the left drop down you choose the default style that yours is based on , in the right drop down you choose the style you want to apply the changes to.

it may or may not work, depending on the style you are trying to work with.

What I wanted to mean is doing these instructions automatically :

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 4&t=880735

I think that a script like automod can do it. That is why I think equally it would be better to have those instructions into an xml file like for a mod, instead of a text file, even if the user don't use a script to update your style (in the case where the author don't support this style anymore), it's really more handy to have an .xml file instead of a .txt file.

About the option of automod that you indicated me, I already used it for mods, but sometime, when I click on Details for a mod, I don't see the option to install it for my style whereas, for the same style, the option is enable for another mod...

It won't be an option for every MOD or every style. it just depends on the MOD author and what the style is.

there is no way to make it automatic for all MODs and all styles.

what text files are you talking about. in most MODs there is a separate xml file for subsilver2 edits but I don't know of any text files for edits in a MOD.

Exactly! In fact, I would like to update my style from 3.0.5 to 3.0.9, and there are thousand instruction to do -__- That's why xml files would be really interesting because they could be read by automod and applied as they were mods on the style files.

It is very doubtful that that is going to happen. there are thousands of styles. many of the style authors don't update their styles at all so trying to get them to create a xml file that can update it is just wishful thinking.
plus, many of the styles are not close enough to the defaults for an xml file to be able to find the correct code etc.

hate to say it, but if you had been updating all along, your process would only be a few minutes now instead of several hours etc.

I did misrread your original post, and my reply was about applying MODs to other styles. sorry about that.

Thank you for your response Lumpy, I see now. In fact, I install my board on my PC (to test it and build my website in local) there is just few days.

I chose this theme : http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/static/

It seems to work OK with php files 3.0.9, but if I do not update the style, I risk to miss some new features isn't it ?

correct that style is actually five versions out of date.

there is no support in it for the new Q&A spambot measures ( that is the only one that is currently working)
there is no support for quick reply

and probably some others that I can't remember right now.

it is going to take quite a bit of work to update it.

luck,
robert

As you said, it will take a lot of time... But after that, it will be easy to keep it up to date. Unfortunately, I will not share the files updated because their are moded. Or maybe I could update the originals files and then mod them.. (it will take more time, moreover, I need to translate all !)

I would like to know if it is possible to have the .psd of the buttons of this style, or something like that, to be able to translate them. Because my board is in French and I don't want to have a button like "SendReply". I already contact the author but he do not answer...

well, there you go. that is why that style has not been updated by the author. you will be much better off finding a new style that is up to date and then add your MODs to it and an up to date language pack etc.
