Tracking down files on Ftp

Post by DenFhF »

Hi All

Our normal programmer is too busy lately with a new baby lately so Im now trying to sort out an issue, and Im a bit of a noob, so Im sorry in advance for whats probably a stupid question.

The issue is I need to remove 3 of the sponser links and banners at the top of the screen, I dont know what Im really looking for or what to delete, I started looking at one of the banners and I followed the folllowing route through the ftp;

http://www.flowerhornfun.com.au/styles/ ... s/AAAA.jpg

and I deleted AAAA.jpg file but it didnt really remove it, only in some screens does the graphic dissapear but the link is still there, so my question is, can anyone show me how I can remove the 3 banners, Exotic Aquotic, Age of Aquariums and the Aquarium artists banners from the front page.

Heres a link to the site
http://www.flowerhornfun.com.au/index.php

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

From http://www.flowerhornfun.com.au/styles/SF_Glacier_307/template/overall_header.html:

Code: Select all

				</div>
					<div style="margin:5px 1px 2px 0;" class="sponsor">
						<a href="http://www.exoticaquatic.com.au" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
							<img src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/exotic-aquatic1.jpg" alt="Exotic Aquatic" />
						</a>
						<a style="margin-left:1px;" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au">
							<img alt="Age of Aquariums" src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/aoa.jpg">
						</a>
						<a style="margin-left:1px;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.citybarn.com.au/">
							<img alt="City Barn" src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/city-barn-banner.jpg">
						</a>
						<!--<a href="http://www.expressaquariumsupplies.com.au" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
							<img src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/eas.jpg" alt="Express Aquarium Supplies" />
						</a>-->
						<a href="http://www.aquariumartists.com.au" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
							<img src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/AAAA.jpg" alt="Aquarium Artists" />
						</a>
					</div>
Try removing that, then purge the cache.

Thanks heaps for your help, but I probably havent emphasised how much of a noob I am, Im interpreting that I need to edit the code in that file, and I can track that file and find it through the ftp, but when I click view/edit it just brings up a non modifiable internet screen, so Im trying to work out how do I open the file to edit it?

or are you suggesting to delete that entire file? but it looks like it has things I want to keep such as the city barn header, I need to position it to the left of screen once the other ones are gone, also I dont know how to purge the cache, your assistance greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Den :)

Ok I just opened the html file in word pad and looked at the code and originally there were 5 banners, now there are 4, the previous site manager removed the 5th sponsor banner which was EAS(express aquarium supplies), however the code that you suggested to remove is there for them as well, so he has been able to remove EAS without touching this code?

Then I noticed these codes for 4 buttons at the bottom of all the code you suggested, so Im taking a wild guess that he just deleted a button line 5 to get rid of the EAS sponsor? and leaving the 4 others still there?

so is that how I change the code, just open in word pad and then modify it, save it, then overwrite it back to the ftp site? sorry this is my first time with html or any sort of programming.

Code: Select all

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
					<div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style ">
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_1"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_2"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_3"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_4"></a>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
</div>
					<div style="margin:5px 1px 2px 0;" class="sponsor">
						<a href="http://www.exoticaquatic.com.au" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
							<img src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/exotic-aquatic1.jpg" alt="Exotic Aquatic" />
						</a>
						<a style="margin-left:1px;" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au">
							<img alt="Age of Aquariums" src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/aoa.jpg">
						</a>
						<a style="margin-left:1px;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.citybarn.com.au/">
							<img alt="City Barn" src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/city-barn-banner.jpg">
						</a>
						<!--<a href="http://www.expressaquariumsupplies.com.au" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
							<img src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/eas.jpg" alt="Express Aquarium Supplies" />
						</a>-->
						<a href="http://www.aquariumartists.com.au" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
							<img src="/styles/SF_Glacier_307/theme/images/AAAA.jpg" alt="Aquarium Artists" />
						</a>
					</div>
					<!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
					<div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style ">
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_1"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_2"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_3"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_4"></a>

Yes, however I would suggest you use a plain text editor such as Notepad++.

Regarding the code, I wasn't sure which banners you were talking about, however your original post stated this:
DenFhF wrote:I started looking at one of the banners and I followed the folllowing route through the ftp;

and I deleted AAAA.jpg file
Since the code I mentioned also had images in the theme folder, I though that would have been what you are looking for. You may be correct that the code you are looking for is right below it. Try it out and see. :D

I tried both deleting what you suggested and deleting and modifying this part below of the code underneath the stuff you mentioned but nothing happened/ or changed after I uploaded it.

Because nothing seems to be changing when I check the website after I upload the modified file Is there something I have to do after I upload it to the ftp and overwrite the old file to implement the new changed file? I wouldnt be bothering you with this, but I have gone through and tried reading everything in the top command bar in filezilla but I cant see anything obvious.

I just click the overwrite option when I upload the modified file and Im am assuming my modified file is overwriting the original file?

Tried deleting this but nothing changed;

Code: Select all

</div>
					<!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
					<div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style ">
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_1"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_2"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_3"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_preferred_4"></a>
					<a class="addthis_button_compact"></a>
					<a class="addthis_counter addthis_bubble_style"></a>
					</div>
