Fixing the styling of my board

Post by mariank »

Thanks AmigoJack - I went through your list and added my comments and questions

  1. 1346 px mininum width: try to size your internet browser window to a lower width and see a couple of your design elements go nuts, i.e. the links near the board keyword search box.
    I see it - What should I do?
  2. Watermarked pictures - the best indicator of non-original content.
    Deleted watermarked pics
  3. Left and right pane show always pictures. Why? Wasted space. And not everybody is able to script it away on his personal needs.
  4. Left and right pane show always the same pictures. Now they not only annoy but also bore me.
    C &D – I set the spots for eventual ads – adsense or sold after the site become popular (right) – I can change pictures now but if they’re ads they’ll stay throughout
  5. Needless capitalizing: why does every word being with big letters in most titles and descriptions?
    Personal preference – Which ones do you see as really bad?
  6. Redundancy in texts: "Please Introduce Yourself ... but please introduce yourself". While other people might not be so picky I feel like reading a foreigner with starting skills in that language.
    You are picky but I did ask for advice so I changed it
  7. Too many forums for such a tiny content. Start with 3 at max, and after one forum has more than 10 pages you can think of creating another one and move existing topics.
    Disagree. I’m not sure what direction this forum will take so I’m waiting to see what interests people and then I’ll delete or move the dead forums
  8. Folder icon backgrounds don't fit the forum row background. To me this indicates beginners. Hell, it's even a GIF, yet you didn't choose to make them transparent?
    Not sure what you’re talking about
  9. The publicons promise valid XHTML and CSS, yet both is invalid at least on the index.
    No idea what you’re talking about
  10. Why do the two lists on the initial site (recent & popular) have a height limit? More horrible: scrollbars inside scrollbars. If the administrator/designer of that site is happy with that then I'm wrong in this place.
    You mean that when you hit the limit the whole page scrolls? Well my popular (which I’ve renamed Blog Posts ) doesn’t have any more posts so you’ll hit the end anyway. I can let recent go on and on till the end (also has an end)

I agree with Amigojack.
The pictures don't line up and so they look a bit messy and you have loads of faces staring at you on all the pages. Just doesn't work. Incidentally, are they pictures that you have permission to use? incidentally, the logo doesn't line up with the text box next to it and the background colour of the links above it doesn't match the background and the home/forum links don't line up with the rest of the text in that line either. Just looks very untidy.

Less is more.
It's better to have 5 forums with 100 posts each than 100 forums with 5 posts each.
It works much better to have broader forum areas and then when you get a certain number of topics on a specific subject, then it's time to make a new forum or category as that is obviously a popular subject.

What he means is, at the bottom, below the phpBB copyright bit, you have W3C links for xhtml and css validation. You're only supposed to use those if the pages are indeed validated for those. Yours are not as they have 20+ invalid entries.

The box scrolls but also the text inside it scrolls as well so you have a scroll box inside a scroll box and they are different heights.

HELP!! - No, I do have real comments and questions.
The pictures don't line up and so they look a bit messy and you have loads of faces staring at you on all the pages. Just doesn't work.

Took out all those pictures though I do think I have to add at least some color around there, maybe balloons to make the site friendly - I'll do that a different time
the logo doesn't line up with the text box next to it
Don't know why. Here's my code for that row (I'm not sure why the pinterest button is on that row)

Code: Select all

<tr>
<td class="logo" colspan="5"><a href="{U_INDEX}"><img src="{T_THEME_PATH}/images/logo.png" border="0" alt="{L_INDEX}" /></a></td>
<td class="logo" colspan="5"><h1>A Friendly Forum Where Parents Exchange Information About Parenting and Newest Baby Products</h1></td>
<a href="//www.pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fchildchat.org%2F&media=http%3A%2F%2Fchildchat.org%2Fstyles%2FSoftBlueV3%2Ftheme%2Fimages%2Fde01%5E012.jpg&description=ChildChat%20Is%20A%20Friendly%20Forum%20Where%20Parents%20Exchange%20Information%20About%20Parenting%20and%20Newest%20Baby%20Products" data-pin-do="buttonPin" data-pin-config="none"><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pinit_fg_en_rect_gray_20.png" /></a>
<!-- Please call pinit.js only once per page -->
<script type="text/javascript" async src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" async src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" async src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js"></script>
              </tr>
the background colour of the links above it doesn't match the background

Left it the color of the whole page since the logo background turns white by the top - maybe I should move them
the background and the home/forum links don't line up with the rest of the text in that line either. Just looks very untidy.
Had a problem since the first 3 buttons (stroller...) are put there by the Button Menu MOD. I would have preferred HOMe FORUM on the left but I ws glad that I even got them on the same line
Less is more.
It's better to have 5 forums with 100 posts each than 100 forums with 5 posts each.
I'll combine - but not today - It's going to be a real job
The box scrolls but also the text inside it scrolls as well so you have a scroll box inside a scroll box and they are different heights
I worked so hard to get it to scroll - I guess I need help. I'm not even sure how I got this far with it. I just played around. Here's my code

Code: Select all

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" borders="0">
	<tbody>
		<tr>
			<td valign="top" style="width: 350px;">
	<div class="genmed" style="background-color: #CC66CC; text-align: center; height: 25px; line-height: 25px; font-weight: bold; border: 1px solid #9ABBDA; border-bottom: none; margin-right: 16px;">Blog Posts</div>
	<div style="height: 450px; overflow: auto; background-color: #E8F0F7; padding: 6px; border: 1px solid #9ABBDA; margin-right: 16px; margin-bottom: 16px;">
	<div style="overflow: auto;height: 650px; width: 335px;">
  <table style="width: 285px;" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
Well I got rid of the XHTML and CSS button :)

I'm not a styles expert, but this kind of misalignment and colour mismatching makes the page look very messy imo (which is what Amigojack was also getting at).
