Need help with table-layout/cell and word-wrap

Post by RenoMan » Thu Jan 21, 2016 4:56 pm

Howdy Folks,

Hope you're all doing good today.

I've got a small issue and would like to understand how to control this kind of post, through either a Greasemonkey userscript, or forum hack I could possibly pass to the site administrator there.

I'm not a coder, simply a hobbyist that likes to dabble.

I've come across this bit of code and, if for no other reason, would like to see how I might apply it to a test html page.

These were other pages that appear to correctly address the issue:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6666 ... 42#6667942

http://stackoverflow.com/a/1263630

The person here is suggesting <div> tags to gain control.

It all sound good though I'm not quite sure what goes where.

If someone would be kind enough to provide a working sample to get me started, that would be really fantastic!

I don't understand why <td> has nowrap, it doesn't make sense. To fix it add this to css

Code: Select all

td.attachrow { white-space: normal; }

Thanks for the reply Arty.

Now where precisely would I place that if I were working with this block that handles that users comment?

Code: Select all

<table width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr><td height="15"><img src="./templates/subSilver/images/spacer.gif" alt="" height="15" border="0" /></td></tr>
</table>
<table class="attachtable" width="95%" align="center" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="1">
<colgroup>
<col width="15%">
<col width="85%">
</colgroup>
<tr>
<td class="attachheader" align="center" colspan="2">icon9.gif</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="attachrow" nowrap="nowrap"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;Description&nbsp;</span></td>
<td class="attachrow" nowrap="nowrap"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;Does it stop if some jerk puts in a load of file comment text though? Perhaps it may, perhaps it might not. Interesting idea though. Thanks Semme (its been quite a while since I messed around with Stylish and Greasemonkey). Testing la-de-dah de-la-de-dah </span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="attachrow" nowrap="nowrap"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;Filesize&nbsp;</span></td>
<td class="attachrow" nowrap="nowrap"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;763 Bytes</span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="attachrow" nowrap="nowrap"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;Viewed&nbsp;</span></td>
<td class="attachrow" nowrap="nowrap"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;96 Time(s)</span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td align="center" colspan="2"><br /><img src="viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=94038" alt="icon9.gif" border="0" /><br /><br /></td>
</tr>
</table>
Remember please, a working example if you would..

that is not the code for that page. it looks like you just copied the viewsource of the webpage.

he said to add it to the css. since this is a MOD that is installed on that board, you would have to edit the css for that MOD.

however, the file for that MOD should be here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/templates/ ... h_body.tpl
and it is not so I have no idea what the owner of that site has setup for it. you will need to ask him about it.

and, the "nowrap" thing is not in the original tpl or css for the MOD either.

I see that your forum doesn't use css files, instead all css is in header. That was a very bad idea. It also seems to be heavily modified installation that uses different directory structure, not standard phpBB structure.

Most likely you need to add code to template overall_header.html

Right you are Robert, the page src.

As I feel the site admin is quite content with how his board's set up, I highly doubt he'd be open for suggestions relating to standard phpBB functionality. Really, based on your comments, those of Arty and my own observations; no control of over-sized offsite images, "code" tags and tables with no sign of containment, e.g., instant horizontal scroll-bars.. There's not much a water buffalo on dry, hard ground could do there.

Not that I've studied much phpBB code structure, but, those nowrap tags didn't look right from the get-go.

CSS in header didn't strike me as odd either, considering..

Now Arty, you mentioned the overall_header.html template.. Where would I find this as nothing more than a forum user?

Is there someway I can view items that control the way the forum's delivered?

Is there anything that could be done with say, Java and a Greasemonkey userscript?

If yes, and I'll assume this is partly possible.

Where's a good place to ask.. A userscript forum?

To edit template you must have access to server. There is nothing you can do as user.

What about Javascript and Greasemonkey?

Should I ask elsewhere or it might not matter based on how non-standard that board's set up?

I've got a script to control os images, I just can't contain runaway tables or code tags.

Suggestions..

you can't edit web pages of any kind on someone else's server without access to the actual files.

not sure what you think you can do with javascript and greasemonkey but you can't do that.

Really Robert?

Laurens resizer script works pretty good with a page like this.

Perhaps not here, but I'm almost certain I can find a Javascript coder that could help me address my concerns.

I do however thank you both for your insightful comments regarding my inquiry.

You can add script that appends style to head section, but that's a very bad idea. Do it properly by editing css.

Why do you not have access to templates? Is it some kind of forum hosting service? If it is, get rid of it and get normal phpBB.

it might change how it looks on your computer but it can not change the actual file unless you somehow have access to the actual file.

that link you showed does exactly that, it changes how your browser shows you the images etc.
it does NOT change the actual file on the server.
