SHORT TUTORIAL PHPBB3 STYLE EDITING

I tried writing this before..only to find out that i had a timeout here and after clicking submit i lost it all
so this version will be alot more strait forward...lets get it ON!!!!!!

TWO WAYS TO EDIT:
ACP..................CONS....NO HARDFILE CHANGE/confusing for beginner
HARDFILES..........CONS....CONSTANT REFRESH/creates making styles a VERY DAUNTING TASK!!

WHAT TO EDIT:
TEMPLATES......\
THEMES.......... From now on referred to as SETS(at least in this tutorial)
IMAGESET......./

Description:
TEMPLATES----- STYLE STRUCTURE (div,li, ect..)
THEMES-------STYLE COLORS (CSS DEF.s)---Also contains seperate image folder for backgrounds.ect..
IMAGESET------IMAGES (LANG IMAGESETS, ect...)

EDITING ACP WAY:

NAVIGATE TO

ACP>STYLES>

Click on the set you would like to edit (refer above)

EDIT THE SET to your liking

CLICK SUBMIT

!!!..EDITING THROUGH ACP DOES NOT CHANGE HARD FILES....!!!
!!!!................ONLY CHANGES DATABASE INFO................!!!!
!!!!!....................DO NOT REFRESH SETS......................!!!!

EDITING HARDFILE WAY:

Navigate the file you want to edit...

Make changes...(refer above for SET descriptions)

!!!....EDITING THROUGH HARDFILES REQUIRES REFRESH....!!!
!!!....Unless you have "Recompile Stale Styles" checked....!!!
{This can be found in ACP>LOAD SETTINGS}

Now that you've made your changes its time to refresh the database information
with the information you've changed. In order to do that you must:

Navigate through the ACP to:

ACP>STYLES>

Select the SET you wish to refresh-(This obviously depends on which set you've made changes to)
(Refer above for set descriptions)

CLICK REFRESH

Now your "HardFile" changes have been entered into the database and you can now refresh your page to see the changes...

********** AUTHOR COMMENTS *************

I do not care for the new way of editing the phpBB3 styles..as if things are not daunting as they are... phpbb felt the need to implement a new step... the database... where as this is a good thing for many other reasons...for style editing it is POOOPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The time it takes to nav to the ACP and refresh all the time to create your styles is outrageous I want to aproximate about a 3-5 hr or more increase in time to create styles.

Again this is ONLY MY opinion.

I hope you all found this helpful.... :D

You don't have to refresh the style if you turn on the option to recompile stale template files...

The only thing I have to refresh is imagesets when I'm done changing the cfg

Well on image changes you will always have to refresh the page twice to see the new one. But other than that, any code changes are reflected immediately for me.

Could you tell me how to make changes I've made to the to the theme in the ACP 'permanent'. I finally got the forum nearly to where I wanted it, hit 'refresh' and all my changes disappeared.

Alright, what the f@*# am I doing wrong??!! I've edited the colours.css file, uploaded it, and refreshed the Prosilver theme in the ACP, but no changes. Why does this seem like it is harder than it should be? All I want to do is change a few colors here and there.

the cfg is just a configuration file for the images names that are placed in an array for the forum system.

all i really know about the cfg is that is holds those image names and then phpbb uses one of their variables to place it inside code in the template files. the database stores that information i think, hense the having to refresh the database with the changes

lol you quoted your own answer.... if you edit the files through the Admin Control Panel then you cannot refresh them atleast the template or css files... i'm not sure if it does with the imagesets or not...i don't use it... see when you edit with the ACP way of doing it... the changes you make go directly to the database... when you refresh them your refreshing them with the coding inside the hardfiles... hardfiles= files on the filesystem...(If you navigate your browser to the ROOT>STYLES>STYLE NAME>HARDFILES)
