First up, great tutorial, thanks.

It's all working fine for me except...

I'm using the random header background image with three different pics, but the only time the image changes is if you manually click refresh. Even restarting IE doesn't change the image. Is this correct? Seems a bit silly if the only way to get a new image is to click refresh?

Many thanks

Nick

When would you expect the header to change? Unless you are using refresh or similar then I would expect the image to stay the same until you refresh the browser. I believe this will be due to browser cache and therefore (although I confess it has been a long while since I have tried) you can include something in the header to instruct the browser not to cache. However this can cause a lot more transfer and therefore eat into your bandwidth.

So the above is so vague, but I am sure someone can fill the the technicalities

Thanks Paul

Yhe problem is that I know the majority of our members use the 'log me in automatically' function and therefore will only ever see one image unless they click refresh, which they wouldn't do in normal circumstances.

What would be good is if I could set the background to change autotically every x minutes - is that possible?

Cheers

As I say it has been a while since I last did this, but you need something like this in between the head tags

Code: Select all

<meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache">
<meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-store">
<meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="private">
<meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="max-age=0, must-revalidate">
<meta http-equiv="expires" content="now-1">
<meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache">
This should cause each page hit to refresh the content including images but do monitor your bandwidth.

You would need something active to change the images on a timed basis (such as PHP, JS, ASP) other than putting a refresh statement in your page which WILL bother your users

Great tutorials, but I haven't come across a solution for a problem I have with my header...
The header is placed within a table (prosilver standard), but I'd like to have the logo pic fixed in the top left corner of the page:

Here's a link to what it looks like now: http://rwf.simplinetworks.net/phpBB3/index.php
Here's an image of what I was trying to create: http://rwf.simplinetworks.net/phpBB3/help.gif

I use the prosilver theme and templates, and only changed the colors and some of the imageset pics.
Also, how do I change the text/links near the bottom? I'd like to change the color of the words/links moderator and administrator in the Legend. Please advice as I can't find anywhere how to change this color.

Thanks for any info you may have on this!

Ok, problem with the admin and mod text color is solved. If there's anyone who knows how to fix the header, please let me know! Thanks.

In overall_header.html, find and remove:

Code: Select all

<div id="wrap">
Find:

Code: Select all

<div class="navbar">
Before, add:

Code: Select all

	</div>
<div id="wrap">
FInd:

Code: Select all

	</div>

	<a name="start_here"></a>
Remove </div>.

In common.css, find:

Code: Select all

body {
	/* Text-Sizing with ems: http://www.clagnut.com/blog/348/ */
	font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
	color: #828282;
	background-color: #FFFFFF;
	/*font-size: 62.5%; This sets the default font size to be equivalent to 10px */
	font-size: 10px;
	margin: 0;
	padding: 12px 0;
}
Change padding: 12px 0; to padding-bottom: 12px;

Thanks so much!!
Almost there...the logo isn't all the way in the corner yet...there's gotta be a margin-top that I need to adjust to 0 I think.

Thanks for the help!

I'm getting the same issue Nick.

When you first come into the forum, you see one of the images, clicking forums as a guest will not show any other image. If you then login, you will see another image from the series and that will stay on every click around the forum, until when you log out, another one appears, which again stays while clicking around as a guest again.

Is this how it should work? I'm sure it use to change on clicks guest or member prior to me adding 'Welcome mod 2.0.0' which added a top message?

Help!

I modified pro-silver special edition according to the instructions here for getting rid of the phpbb logo, inserting my own, and getting rid of the site description/name. It seemed to work fine (I understand this is a bit different template but I can't find instructions on this specific template and no one in that forum thread replies to me). However, my logo which is 75x500 pixels is squished to the left where the old phpbb logo was. I need for it to be centered and the correct size. Any recommendations? If you want to see it go to my site below but add /phpbb to the url or navigate to the forum.

your help is really appreciated!

You have changed both your logo and your header background, what exactly you want to keep of them ? They both don't seem to be well fit for the header.

I want the current logo to be centered where the site description used to be and to be expanded to its correct size of 75x500 pixels. I followed the directions for changing the height but I haven't seen anything on how to change width or how to put the gif logo image in the center of the page as opposed to the left.

Thanks for your reply

To change the logo dimensions, open file: styles/prosilver_se/imageset/imageset.cfg, find:

Code: Select all

img_site_logo = site_logo.gif*52*139
and add the dimensions of your logo 'height*width'.

To center it, open file: styles/prosilver_se/theme/common.css, find:

Code: Select all

#logo {
	float: left;
	width: auto;
	padding: 10px 13px 0 50%;
}
then refresh your imageset and themes through ACP.

OK Illuminative,

I made the first you suggested. On the second suggestion you just told me what to find but not what to do so I changed float: left to float: center and now I have a tiny squished logo on the left like before plus full size logos repeating across the top of the page.

Thanks for helping me by the way. At least I'm seeing some progress!

Hi again Illuminative,

I found some advice you gave NuNu back in August and followed it.
TheIlluminative wrote:Well, Nunu, try this:
open file: styles/prosilver/common.css, find:

Code: Select all

.headerbar {
	background: #ebebeb none repeat-x 0 0;
	color: #FFFFFF;
	margin-bottom: 4px;
	padding: 0 5px;
	height: 100px;
eight: 1
}
replace with:

Code: Select all

.headerbar {
	background: #ebebeb none no-repeat 0 0;
	color: #FFFFFF;
	margin-bottom: 4px;
	padding: 0 5px;
}
open file: styles/prosilver/colours.css, find:

Code: Select all

.headerbar {
   background-color: #E3F5FA;
   background-image: url("{T_THEME_PATH}/images/logo-new-no-bg.png") 0 0 no-repeat;
	color: #FFFFFF;
}
replace with:

Code: Select all

.headerbar {
   background-color: #E3F5FA;
   background-image: url("{T_THEME_PATH}/images/logo-new-no-bg.png");
   color: #FFFFFF;
}
open file: styles/prosilver/overall_header.html, find:

Code: Select all

				<div style="height: 90px;">
and delete it.
Refresh then your themes and templates through ACP.
I got rid of the repeat this way. I then had a good looking logo on the top left but I still had a small squished logo in the center overlapping the good one. Also, something funky happened with the search box and the width of the entire forum seems to have shrunk so there is no side margin space all the way down the page. In addition my header bar has rounded corners on top and it looks like rounded corners coming in half way down but then the bottom of the header bar is not rounded. I'm not sure what happened?

I got rid of the squished logo and was able to center my larger logo but the page width issue and the header area issue of corners still exists.
