Howto

Post by ChristopherTech »

For those of you wondering exactly how this helps your forum, first you place the two files in the appropriate spots. (For me, the first file went in the root directory of my form.../forum and the 2nd went where it asked)
Then, point your aggregator to the php file. This is where your RSS will be compiled. I use Google RSS Reader, so the Url I put into the reader was http://www.christophertech.com/Forum/rss.php. It aggregated nicely and looks pretty darn good.

Sorry if I'm duplicating here, but I don't have time to trawl through 50 pages.

I was just wondering if it was possible for this feed to filter by category? c=n doesn't appear to work.

Will it work with a private forum?

Post by Speedie »

Hi,
This used to work fine until I switched my forum to be private so members must log-in to view messages. Now when I go to the rss page in my browser I get a "No matches found" page, and my RSS reader won't pick up any messages. Can this be changed to work for private forums as well?

This mod is EASY to install... however, it requires something to help with exteremly busy boards.. mine is not, lol, but for those that are..

It needs something that will cache the database query every minute or 5 minutes.

I do alot of ColdFusion at work.. I tried searching for a PHP equivalent to CFCACHE.

Doing a database query for EVERY REQUEST is unacceptable.. someone with a ton of PHP experience should come up with a solution?!??! Anyone?!?

It shouldn't be too difficult - one of my first hacks was generating a cache based on del.icio.us. I might have a go at it myself if I ever get a minute (i.e. not soon!).

Going to sound like an arse....

Is this the mod I need to pull from a surfline.com RSS for my web site? RSS=(http://www.surfline.com/rss/region.cfm? ... iabeachcam)

I'm a hacker, and not sure about the syndication stuff. I want to add the outcome report to my header_template to let me know what the surf is doing.

I'll add to the center of the weather table seen here>> http://www.wavejunkies.com/phpBB2/index.php

Will this slow down my page response too (I don't want that)

Thanks for your help.

I have two forums (ver 2.0.21) in which I installed this mod.

The first forum rss.php is installed in the root directory ./ and everything works beautifully.

The second forum's root for the phpBB fourm is /forum. I uploaded rss.php into the /forum diriectory and expected everything to work as in the above case, but instead got the following error msg:

Template->make_filename(): Error - file rss_body.tpl does not exist

The template is in the proper directory and the file is not corrupt. Anybody have an idea why I'm getting the error?

$HTTP_GET_VARS needs to be replaced with $_GET for it to work with php5.

Excellent! Was just trying to work out why the ?f= was being ignored when I stumbled on your post. Could be worth the author having an updated version. Otherwise do as above and it allows php5 users to narrow down, forum, topic and number of lines.

rss Not Working

Post by cben »

I tried the RSS Syndicator but I can't see how to syndicate the threads?
I see no difference or new options on the bb or the admin side.
Did I miss something?

For clarification where should the rss.php page be located?

Any help appreciated
