I jumped into the deep end on a project and got in over my head.
I've been trying to write a template that will make Joomla and phpBB appear to be seamlessly integrated to the user. I wanted to use nav buttons at the very top of the page and wanted then to roll/highlight, and then I got to the new private messages display...

I started out hacking the subsilver template but couldn't find everything.
I should be able to make this and similar mods thanks to this posting.

I am using the jasidog v 1.08 template and would like some kind of notification for my new msgs, the previous psots where you have helped others do not have any of the links working for the images... is there one that would work for this template and would i still need to use the mod here or is just a matter of adding something no notify of new messgaes and changing the jasidog.cfg file? I would like it to show only when there are new or unread messages. thanks a million.

pm'd you with a link to the template and login info so you can see the message notifier as it stands now

VBDesign, do you have a specific question?

DeathsDesign, looks like that template doesn't use any icons in the header. You probably need to specify an icon in the .cfg file and also modify overall_header.tpl file to ensure sure it displays that icon. Since there are usually no icons in the header, you will probably want to specify a blank icon (i.e. a transparent gif) for the icon when there are no messages.

Wasn't a question actually, but a profound display of gratitude.
I have my buttons set up and they work great now.

My template is a beveled glass window that fills the page.
The top section is rectangular border pieces that are neatly formatted in a table. The buttons are rollover buttons that appear to sparkle in the sunlight onmouseover.

The private messages "bevel" button now shines an animated rainbow/prism effect across that button when there are new messages, lights up with a static prismatic effect when there are unread messages, and shows a piece of beveled glass typical of the other buttons by default. When the Messages button, or any of the other buttons is true for onmouseover, the beveled glass button pieces each light up consistantly with the sunspark effect. Works great.

I was just struggling with were to set up the images and it wasn't working correctly before I found this posting. I found the $image variables in the .cfg file, but that by itself wasn't giving me the result I needed. Thanks to the additional details here I was able to sort the rest of it just fine.

if you want to take a peek... Keeping in mind that it is a work in progress and not linked from the site's index page yet. Not even close to done.

I'll be basing the site's Joomla template on this design and then sectioning it up into chunks that fill the page. Then I'll have to sorta reverse engineer my forum template into pieces that will load in the Joomla template when the forum link is hit.

Mostly I just wanted to stop by and say hi, and thanks for the help... I wasn't posting a problem, jsut saying that this posting was super helpful.

So do I use your mod to do that? Also for the time when there is a new message. is there a p[lace where i can access some icons? The ones you have on the first few pages on this thread are broken links.

VBDesign, thanks for clarifying. I wasn't sure.

DeathsDesign, you need to create the icon yourself if you are not using the standard template. For now I would not worry about what icon. Just use the blinking one (in the third post of this topic) for the icon when there are new messages. Then once you have everything working, create a fancier icon yourself that better matches your skin (do a google search if you need help creating an animated icon). Use a transparent.gif for the icon when there are no new messages. You specify these icons in the .cfg file. You also need to make sure the {PRIVMSG_IMG} image will display in your overall_header.tpl, something like this:

<a href="{U_PRIVATEMSGS}" class="mainmenu"><img src="{PRIVMSG_IMG}" border="0" hspace="2" alt="{PRIVATE_MESSAGE_INFO}" />{PRIVATE_MESSAGE_INFO_UNREAD}</a>

I'm using a flashing button only for this, how do I remove the text link next to the flashing icon?
(I've done this before but I can't remember )
Thanks :D

Removing the text link would be done in the skin template.
