b5 Is mov/qt broken in attachments?

Post by houser »

My search gave no hits on this..

Just upgraded my testsite to b5.

So...b5 Is mov/qt broken in attachments?
It seems so at least in Safari in OSX 10.4.9.

* I can't view .mov files in a topic view, which seemed to work in b4.
Has this been broken?
It is probably complicated and also codec-related to do this right?

* First click on .mov file opens a small part of the movie as a partial broken thumb-pic.
Second click plays some codecs but not all, all the time.
Firefox works better...

Also, if I try to-dload a .mov file, it will d-load a file called "download.php" instead ratherthan the actual file.

Has this been broken or am I missing something somewhere in settings?

Are there hints or tips on which codecs are better?
Browser independence is preferred...if at all possible..

Thanx for any feedback!

Janne A.

Update:

Tested in Firefox and Netscape which both behave better than Safari.
Safari can not play anything in my installation.

Anyone else can confirm this?

TIA and regards

Ok, I've just taken a quick look at it.

What seems to actually be happening is that the file is downloading, but the correct name is not being applied. If you change the extension to .mov on the download then it plays in QT fine.

I'd guess that it's something to do with this change. For some reason it's not renaming the file that it downloads, rather it's taking the name of the linked file. This is going to turn out to be some weird, but unavoidable, functionality of Safari isn't it :? . Thinking about it now, I think I might have seen this happening before, but blamed it on the site I'm downloading off.

I'm going to look into it abit more to see if I can spot anything else, then submit a bug report. That may not be till tomorrow though, my connection seems to be playing games with me

Just conforiming these things are repeatable.

While you are at it..
Ther eseems to be an issue with displaying the QT movies the first time you play them.
You need to click them two or three times for it to woek as expected.
Please let me know if I can help more.
I would love to get this working in my testsystem!

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this.

After some effort, I haven't been able to replicate this on my local test servers. I would guess it's caused at least partly by a setting on your server.

I don't think I can post a bug report, since I only experience the bug when using your server, I won't be able to give any additional info that may be asked for.

I'd suggest that you post it to the bug tracker, including a link to this topic. Also, if you post a link to the bug once you've posted it I'll have a glance at it and make sure you haven't missed anything.

Thanx,

I am seeing the same on the commercial webotel at One.com that I
run some boards on.
My test system there shows the same...
Safar does not rename the d-loadedfile.
Playback of moviefilerequires one or more clicks...and shows
the same issues when playbackstarts as discussed before.
It looks like this first time I click:

and sometimes it drifts like this:

Ah well...Sorry I can't be more helpful....

Update

Post by houser »

Update,

I am doing extensive testing on various video codecs at the moment.
In Safari and Firefox under OSX.

In short, most if not all of the newer formats like H264, MPEG4 etc work very well.
All streaming formats seem to be happy in Olympus..
Which is all good..!!
The older formats like MPEG1 etc.. are unpredictable which I will not
argue...weneed to move on ,-)

Now!
If you can fix the way Safari thinks every file is named "download.php"
then I would say Safari is not a showstopper...;-)

Thanx for listening
FWIW, YMMV

If you don't report it to the bug tracker, then it won't get fixed.

The bug tracker is here.

Thinking about it, it'd also probably be a good idea for you to see if you can replicate it with non-movie files (say, an archive) to see how broad the issue is.

Safari

Post by houser »

Ok,

Sorry I am being unclear..

Safari (edit: as well as Netscape) names all d-loads regardless of mov, doc
download.php

The correct file is d-loaded but named "download.php"
Renaming it and changin the extension when d-loadedfixes it.

This is 100% repeatable on two servers one being One.com
and the othermy own OSX server.
Safari and Netscape never works, Firefox allways works..

No one else seeing this?
Either I have something wrong on my setups
or the team is not testing with Safari..;-)
Ah well, that's what betas are for...
Let me know ifI can help...
