Post by mfest »

I recently fininshed setting up my first phpBB and was looking through this forum trying to find a newbies tips and suggestions section. Does one exist? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for a newbie like me?

I was hoping to find something that would help out anyone new to this, such as common mistakes, general setup suggestions, how to promote a forum,-- something along those lines.

me too

I was looking for the same type of thing - a primer for common mistakes with new forums. Like putting in some commonly used categories or forums.

Also, how can I move a post from one category to another?

Thanks,

m

Thanks Lord D, the knowledge base is indeed very helpful, but I was hoping for a more concise try to avoid this or don't forget to do that kind of guide.

Good Idea

Post by aparsons »

That's a good idea. There is the Manual. But something like you said would be nice too.

Maybe it could include:
1. How to change the logo and edit the main menu in overall_header.php
2. How to protect users email addresses (by enabling email via the board)
3. How to find and install Styles and MODs
4. Whether or not to use Gzip
5. Ways to integrate the board with your site, such as a common login, etc

Is that the sort of thing you are looking for?

and mstark, you move those posts while logged in as admin or moderator, the links are at the lower left of the last post.

Exactly, and maybe common pitfalls or mistakes.

On my forums, I included an FAQ thread in my Forum Help Center forum. It includes some *basic* questions most people would probably ask.

One of the things I have most missed when I started my first phpBB was a quick reference sheet.

i.e. How avatars work, where to upload them.. Same goes for styles.

I found it all in the FAQ/manual/knowledge base, but it would've been nice for a quick rundown of the things all forum admins will eventually want to do anyway.

If I weren't so damn lazy, I'd probably do one myself ;)
