Using GNU Gettext for interface translation

Hey guys! I was wondering... with phpBB being OpenSource and all... Why wouldn't You use GNU Gettext engine for translating interface strings?

I am current Administrator of Ubuntu Georgian localization team and it's just delightful to work with .po/.mo files... There are translation engines available both on- and offline... The whole GNU\Linux world, Wordpress and may other programs, rely entirely on this... And it works almost perfectly

Why not use it? Are there any technical difficulties?

This is a very important issue IMHO. Performance-wise too.

P.S.(I will post there too, but isn't the link You've kindly given me in a forum for 4.0 ideas? I see that phpBB3 versions don't come out very often, so I think this should be a milestone for one of the upcoming versions... Like 3.1 or smth...)
