It is very simple.
Turn off the image size checking on the appropriate Admin settings pages.

i have done so unless its the wrong box and it no longer allows avatar settings in the usercontrol panel.

instead i put it back the way it was and enabled link-off site it allows an off site image link which i tested but however it seems in still a t square one with uploading my own or adding it from a photo album and such by way of upload from url & upload by machine. neither function has yet to work.

Re: It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the i

After about 1 hour of trying to figuring things out - checking for furl setings, applying the fix etc., even checking my .htaccess, directory permissions etc. etc. - I found the reason that was bringing up this error message for me: the image URL I gave was incorrect!

Talk about misleading error messages .....

I changed

Code: Select all

			if ($stats === false)
			{
				$error = true;	// following line modified by richey
				$this->warn_msg[] = $user->lang['UNABLE_GET_IMAGE_SIZE'];
			}
to

Code: Select all

			if ($stats === false)
			{
				$error = true;	// following line modified by richey
				$this->warn_msg[] = $user->lang['UNABLE_GET_IMAGE_SIZE']. ' or image URL not correct/accessible';
			}
as a dirty hack until this has been fixed by the phpbb team.

I thought this feedback might be of help for someone.

"It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image" does neither include nor exclude that the given URL can't be accessed (there is already a check whether a URL is incorrect or not) - so what is misleading about that? Also when determining the image dimensions there is no detailed info available on what went wrong. Definitly not a bug.

Well, for me for one it WAS misleading.

What would be easier to include a check for the simple existence of the image URL submitted and to give an informative error message?

It's not my problem anymore, but fixing that could save many hours for all the people who try to start using phpBB 3 every day and might blame the software or 'configuration problems' for a typo they made during the tense process of setting up their board. No need to reply, just my 2 cents.

If you think it is a worthwhile improvement then place a ticket in the phpBB Bug Tracker. The developers don't have time to read through every post on this site to find possible suggestions for improvements.
