Bandwidth going through the roof.

Post by tay666 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 2:23 am

For some reason, our bandwidth usage has doubled.
We were using 2500-2800 megs per day pretty consistently for months now.
Suddenly earlier this month that number jumped to around 5000 megs per day.

I am not sure if there is some kind of problem I should be looking for, or if we are just victims of our own success. So, I thought I would ask those that have a bit more experience at this kind of stuff.
We don't have any attachments, and members cannot upload files.
Running 3.0.10

Here are the numbers for this year.

......visitors | visits . | , Pages . | . . Hits . . | Bandwidth
Jan | 19,841 | 76,676 | 1,624,562 | 6,723,381 | 79.47 GB
Feb | 18,747 | 72,552 | 1,404,883 | 6,065,731 | 70.18 GB
Mar | 20,207 | 77,478 | 1,460,243 | 6,054,652 | 70.49 GB
Apr | 15,731 | 59,610 | 2,084,166 | 8,045,230 | 95.42 GB

Here is the breakdown on what is using the bandwidth
jpg | 27.20 GB | 28.5 %
gif. | 02.51 GB | 02.6 %
php | 59.41 GB | 62.2 %
htm | 04.28 GB | 04.4 %

Even though this month isn't over yet, so the unique visitors and number of visits are lower than previous months, the number of pages and hits are a lot higher than previous months. Which is driving up the bandwidth.
I'm pretty sure that most of the JPG bandwidth is from the static HTM pages where we have a photo gallery that the members use for reference. Usage is up a couple gigs from normal average, but not a huge jump.
It isn't from BOT traffic either. As all those are reading low. as always. About 1.5 gigs total for all spiders.

Does this look like a normal growth spurt where member are just reading more posts, and posting more comments?

Would gzip help. Or with our traffic, would that put too big a strain on other resources?

Posted images, signatures and avatars also contribute significantly to bandwidth usage. As your active userbase increase, your bandwidth usage should also increase.

Most webmasters are usually thrilled when their bandwidth usage increases. And bandwidth is pretty cheap nowadays, and 5 GB/month isn't something to be alarmed about.

That is 5 gig a day, not per month.
It was 2.5 gigs per day (or 2500 megs as stated in the original post)

We are on a dedicated server and had a plan with 100 gigs of bandwidth per month.
Which has been working fine for years. Until this massive uptick in bandwidth.
We are on a pace right now to be close to 150 gigs for the month. And that is with a week of 'normal' usage to start the month, and a day and a half down when we exceeded our bandwidth limit last weekend.

Posted images should not add to bandwidth, as all images have to be hosted somewhere else to be posted on the board.
There are no images in signatures.
And our entire avatar directory is only 11.78 megs for all 2225 users.
We limit avatars to 80x80 and 3500 bytes

As I noted, the majority of this surge is coming from PHP files.
In the 22 hours since I took the last numbers, we have used
jpg - 0.98 gig
gif - 0.17 gig
php - 4.68 gig
htm - 0.31 gig
