Could not upload attachment to ./files/

Post by colorwarphotos » Mon Oct 08, 2012 7:58 pm

Hello.

I run the forum www.pixpast.com
It is running on 3.0.9.

upto last night every thing was super but now today when users go online and try and attach a photo. they get this message every time.

Could not upload attachment to ./files/

I checked the admin settings and the max data size for this files folder is 0 (so no limit)
I also checked my hosting account and there is lots of space there ??

any ideas where this problem could lie ?

many thanks.
Ian

Is the /files/ directory set to 777 for permissions?

did it and then checked again, still nothing in the attributes box ??

weird.
i can post treads with text no problem, but no way to post an attachment ?

please help.
Thanks.

You appear to be on a Windows server, chmod only applies to *unix based servers. You would need to ask you host to check and change the permissions on that folder.

ok got back an email from my hosting company

Your domain is hosted on a Windows server, therefore it isn't possible to set file permissions as 777 - I can however, confirm that all folders on your hosting package are read/writable.

so what can I do now ?

i just tried to update my php with the newest version.
put in the install directory and went through the whole update process no problem, until the option comes to download the install files.
clicked it at the end of the process and this is what i got

Information
Unable to open file ./../store/update_3.0.8_to_3.0.11_1349866383_fe46e163290fbfa5.tar.gz [gzopen - wb]

can some one please help me understand the problem here ?

thanks.

There can be different reasons:
  • all Upload first go to a temp directory and are afterwards copied to the destination directory - temp directory ist php-specific and controlled by php-setting "upload_tmp_dir" [see php-info on acp] - check the rights for that directory (or let you host do it)
  • there is a maximum file size defined by "upload_max_filesize" [see php-info on acp]
  • Thumbnail generation may fail
  • ...

looks like basically the same problem - file rights 8-)

If your host still says they can't help you ask them to check their scripts in the cgi-bin directory. Very often host first line support aren't good at troubleshooting they just use flash cards.

thank you.
I have sent them a new email with your suggestion.
It was very weird, i came home and the site attachments worked for 30 minutes. then clicked on a new attachment and BANG, cannot access to files... bla bla bla.

very weird.

Can i ask, would it be a good idea to change my hosting account from windows to linux, then I could put in the 777 command for these folders.
Would that hurt my forum setup ?

Thanks.

Sometimes hosting companies will put a hard cap on the number of files in a single directory. How many files do you have in that directory?

Linux servers generally give more scope for resolving issues, like file permissions, than Windows servers.

We have no way of knowing whether that is at or over your host's limit. You will need to check with them what the limit is.

Then went back into the forum and tried attaching some thing... worked again...
very very weird..

but will check again in a few hours and see what happens.
