Installing a MOD with the compressed file download has two steps:
1) Extract the files in the zip file and upload them to your site. Overwrite the already-existing phpBB files.
2) Manually copy the "new" files the MOD includes in its "root/" subdirectory to your site.

Can you please elaborate A_Jelly_Doughnut.

I have downloaded the mChat modification.
Unzipped it onto my desktop.
There's a folder called mchat_new_version_1_3_5 I have opened up. Do I copy the files in this (contrib, root, install, license) or do I just copy the files in the root folder to the root folder of my forum?

depends on whether you are using automod or not.

if you are using automod then you unzip the MOD to your computer and upload the included folder to the store/mods folder on the server.

if you are not using automod, then follow the instructions in the link above about how to install a mod.
