Board offline

Post by wintstar »

Board Offline is a second option to disable board, where the board index appears. The buttons "New Topic", "Reply" and "Locked" will be hidden.

Features:
  • Only admins can log in
  • Guests receive a message when you click a username. Even with direct access via URL link
  • Separate texts for guests and admins. Guests get the text displayed to the administrator in ACP can enter in "maintenance mode". Admins get the standard text display the maintenance mode is active.
  • Board offline can be used as Board archive
And some more, looks here http://testboard.wintstar.de/

Please note that I will not be porting any of my mods to phpBB 3.1. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Not only, the mod has a another background. If the board is long time disabled generates Google and other search engines Error with Messages. Which must then be removed laboriously. From SEO point of view, a more or less a disaster. And if you want to close the board can you offer the important issues as an archive to read.

You wouldn't need to disable it though.
You just set the forum permissions to read only.

And if it's only a non used archive, SEO doesn't really matter any more.

But then the buttons are still there.

You can edit those out. If it's going to be an archive they won't be needed any more.

I'm not sure, whether we do that atm, but if not we should set the HTTP Header Status to "Temporarily Unavailable" then Google and others might come back to it later.

This alone is not enough. As it is with advertising where you can make money with it. If you disabled a little longer during an update or backup the board then there is clicks less. And thus less revenue. Or little involvement on the Board, then you can close and see how many views the Board. Then they can open it again. Or for example, it is only a Board for the winter session. There are certainly more options.

Novices? Everybody who posted here has been registered longer than you and has more posts than you. They also have more posts than winstar and all but one were registered longer (and that was only by a matter of months).

If anybody implements this, there should still be a message that the board is currently offline. Maybe that's what "Guests receive a message when you click a username" is supposed to mean, but I don't know. What does clicking a user name have to do with anything?

I'm still not convinced, though. For example, even if the board is only seasonal, that doesn't mean that people wouldn't want to post during the summer. For example, a ski lodge might still want inquiries about when reservations would be accepted.

Also, you don't want to confuse users with two different "offline" options. If you're upgrading to a new version, which requires a database update, you probably would want the board disabled (as you do currently), not offline.

Finally, technically the board is still online if you can view the index or topics or whatever. Even a disabled board is still online. ;)

There are certainly dozens of options for forums where this additional feature is useful. This would certainly be a long list. So far I've only read that for some function does not make sense, but I see in the voting for the majority function is useful. Let us discuss how one might improve the function.

a) this is a lot of work
b) users could still login and write PMs and stuff

Clicking the mouse isn't that much work. It's not like manual labor.
You can take away PM permissions too.
