Gender

Post by PeeweeHerman »

There is a number of mods that provide the possibility registering a member's gender, but none are recent. Also, upgrading to a newer version of phpbb will cause problems.
So, please add an extra field to the user profile for gender with the possibility to make it a mandatory field, and also an option to filter on it.
Thanks!

Reason: Correct lack of agreement between subject and predicate - "a number" is singular".

This can be done using the Custom Profile Fields.

Really? Missed that one then.
But still, wouldnt it be something rather obvious to set when a user registers? Shouldnt be a Custom Profile Field if you ask me...

Ive +1'd simply because I think it should be there as standard along with:
Name
Date of Birth

Seems a logical thing to add imo.

I don't get it why people vote against my suggestion. It's trivial userdata...

Because it is already possible to do.

I get a bit creeped out when a website asks for my gender when it doesn't need it.
macr.ae = my website. you probably won't like it.

I'm convinced this isnt the place for this question, but I have made a custom profile field, made it mandatory on registration, selected show in user control panel...but I cannot use it for find a member in ACP, nor can I make it a private field (not showing to other users), I cant filter on it, how can I use it to make a female-only subforum...how is this useful?

No only because it can be done via CPF. However, the CPF needs to be improved a bit.

Does it really matter if I'm male or female? If your users are okay with providing personally-identifiable information, use the CPF, but making it default for all installs is going to drive people away.

Drive people away?! LOL.

Well here's a fact for you...

On many forums I've used, I have seen countless examples of replies to posts such as:
"Cheers mate"
Cheers dude"
Thanks bro"
Welcome along man"

When these replies were to Women, obviously they had to correct the people replying to them. I've seen this on many forums over many years so I looked to correct it on mine.

Here's the fact...As soon as everybody knew the gender of the person they were conversing with...It stopped. You have to consider that many forums may seem Male OR Female dominated but obviously have members of the opposite sex too. PHPBB isn't a great example because there is a good representation of each sex.

A car forum is a good example...May seem male dominated but...

Yes, drive people away. Why on earth should I be forced to provide identifying information about myself if I don't want to? I refuse to register for sites that force the use of Facebook login. They don't need access to that information. I refuse to register for sites that force me to provide more information than is necessary to participate. Laugh all you want, but I just gave you an example.
