cheap and performance rarely go together :D

google is the only think I know of.

you can ask godaddy what they offer for this type of service.

why do you think you will have this much email traffic?

do you have everyone subscribed to every topic?
how many members do you have?
how many posts per day do you have?

even If ( and that is such a big IF I can't even imagine it) 1000 members joined in the first week. There would be no reason at all for the board to be sending any emails out in batches.

The emails for the registration would only be sending one at a time as people register.

Unless you specifically change the default behaviour of phpbb, people do not get emails everytime a post is made.

If you do make those changes so that everyone gets emails everytime a post is made then some would say you are spamming them because they did not request to get all those emails.

I think you should re-assess what you think the board is going to do in terms of signups/posts etc. Just get the board started and work on finding new members. Create content that people want to come to your board to read and let the rest of it take care of itself.

Then forget about it for now, if you eventually do get thousands of users who want email notifications you can address it then. In the meantime you should be concentrating on getting interesting informative information on your board so you attract new members.

What are the current settings for Gmail SMTP? None of the settings in this thread work - absolutely NO combination works. I get no error. Registration is done but emails are never received. OpenSSL on as well.

Yes they do. If they are not working for you check with your host if your account can use email (sometimes hosts will not allow an email service for particular accounts) and what the conditions and requirements for that are.

I had the same issue and had to do a couple of things.

First I went to security.google.com and clicked the button that the attempts were not malicious.
Then I went to https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

Once I clicked that, I then tried to do something that would generate an email (such as re-authorize a pending account) and it worked.

But its wery important that SSL support is installed with PHP

I du use:
Windows 2000 Server
MySQL 4.1.11i
PHP 5.2.5 (version 4 do not support SSL)
phpBB 3.0.0 (gold)

ACP -> Quick access -> PHP Information
Look for this

Code: Select all

openssl
OpenSSL support enabled
OpenSSL Version OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007
Create a Gmail account and do the set this:
www-gmail.com -> Settings - > Forwarding and POP/IMAP -> Enable POP for all mail
Enable IMAP (not sure if this is needed)

In phpBB
ACP -> Client communication -> E-Mail settings

User SMTP server for email: YES
SMTP server address: ssl://smtp.gmail.com
SMTP server port:465
Authentication method for SMTP:LOGIN
SMTP username:[email protected] (need to be the same as "Contact e-mail address:")
SMTP password:gmailpassword

It seems to be a bug with the password. I tried to use 20 character long password with brackets and it did not work. Shorter password did work, so I do not know if it's a limit on number of characters or type of characters.
I can confirm that this is working for me, many thanks.

Also had a big struggle, until I searched these forums.

Thank you! :)
