Irony

Post by mals69 »

Started a general topic on the 14th of July and only got two replies, seems ironic that
a website whose site slogan is "creating communities" does not have much of one interms of
non phpbb discussion ? Or is non phpbb discussion not encouraged case people do not know when to draw
the line in behaviour from community general discussion to support forums ?

Or is it Gandhi's proverb - if you want change you must be the change ?

the point of this site is phpbb. having a general discussion forum was probably just an after thought of the web site team. there never has been much traffic in this forum. most people coming here are looking for help with phpbb just like you have been doing and are not interested in a general discussion forum.

possibly due to past severe moderation of this area.

Quite a number of veteran members have given up trying to have any kind of non-phpBB chat after Moderators have crashed their way around off topic threads for years

yes pretty sad :x

Sad alright - typed out my thoughts in couple of paragraphs but deleted, thought what am I doing when I get the underlining feeling users of the site are not valued so why would their thoughts be ?

I can tell you are from the right side of the pond Noth - not afraid to speak your mind !

Will leave the last word to Alexa which demonstrates how valued users feel. "Can the last one to leave please turn out the light"

Just because a topic you started didn't generate any discussion doesn't mean it's all game over.

You can roll your eyes as much as you like but might make more sense to "wake up and smell the coffee" how deluded do you think I am to base an opinion that its game over solely cause I got only two replies. Listen for once to your users, read what the likes of noth posted.
On rethink roberts post is just a cop-out, plenty of specialist sites that also have a great community spirit
where people share, care and have fun with one another.
Suspect noth is on the money when he said about heavy handed moderation in general, that comes from a place of pure fear managing a website like that. Gather a few of Richard Branson and the likes notes and you will see you can run a business and still create an environment that is enjoyable to be in.

And is it not time phpbb was taken to the next level ? Users have to pay for a license then support staff can be paid and more employed cause this current set up is not working, if anyone involved with this site thinks that after waiting 22 hours and your question has still not been answered is acceptable its easy to spot the deluded ones. Want to keep it open source, take on more support staff.

2014 not 1970 !

In my view all that the future is going to hold otherwise is what has already been seen in the main, hordes of dreamers wanting a community forum, downloading phpbb only to chuck the towel in quick.
People that want to use phpbb for a commercial purpose are never going to put up with the current poor level of support. What ultimately is going to spread the word about phpbb - having powered by phpbb on some dreamers site for a few months with a handful of users or someone operating in the real commercial world with powered by phpbb being on their site decade after decade and millions of views ?

I just looked back through 5 pages of GD and only half a dozen topics have been locked. One was a survey which is not allowed under the rules and the rest are support topics. That's not being heavy handed at all. That's people posting in the wrong place.

You're talking about a GD topic, not a support one. Support topics usually get at least one answer within minutes. We're here for support.

I do believe you are the one who is delusional here, especially If you are basing any of your opinions on that link to alexa rankings. you do realized that alexa has been basically irrelevant for years don't you?

as far as I know, phpbb is still the #1 used bulletin board software in the world. ( free or paid ).
If there is a slow down of traffic there is one reason that people seem to forget. The software works, there is not near the need for support that there was a year or two ago.

WHen I first started here, a post would be off the first page within minutes. That is rarely the case now because there are not that many people having problems and because most questions have been asked and answered a hundred times or more.

I don't think my opinion is a cop out at all. I can't speak for anyone but myself but I don't see a need on a support site for a general discussion topic. If I want that I will go to a site that is for general discussion.
When I go to a support site for help that is what I am interested in, not some silly discussion about who likes what game or whatever.

It seems to me the low participation in the GD is evidence that my opinion is valid.

On a site a big and as busy as this one is, having the occasional post slip through the cracks and not get a quick answer is unfortunate, but does happen.

Based on most of the posts you have made here for help, It seems that until the last few days you have been very happy with the help you have received here. ( all the way back to 2006 including your 240 posts for help with phpbb2. )

What happened all of a sudden ?

In the past, moderation has been heavy handed. I don't feel that's currently the case. You're welcome to send me a message if you ever feel something is over-moderated or have questions on how a moderator has handled an issue.

As far as why we don't have more discussion here, I personally feel it simply isn't a focus of this site. Yes, we do have a regular community of contributors, and discussion takes place among them. But we're focused on the support and customisation aspects of running your site. Discussions in this forum are non-phpBB related, and just not what people visit us for. Rather, isn't the time better spent the time discussing general topics on your own sites, in order to build your community? :)

I remember now a time when there was passion in this catorgorie. As for spending time on building your own community - plenty of love to go round - What's 5 minutes spent in here now and again ?

5 minutes that could have helped the grumpie old bugger in this thread to actually get his forum off the starting line . Think noth summed it up - Sad

United we conquer - divided we fall.

Cheers Darcie for your honesty and valid point of contacting a team leader if not happy.

Responses like in the link below from support give me the shi.s - yes maybe it should have been put in general but we are obviously not in Nazi Germany in 2014 - where is the love in that response ? Directed to keep emailing and PMing - most natural thing to do what the poster did - support ? There is no feeling of family here just cold and sterile - who wants to support a product with such an environment long term ?

"No punch without judy" look around plenty examples of users being grateful for the software and peoples time but the cold sterile robotic environment does not give users a feeling they are valued. Without users the project obviously comes to a close.

viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2102117

If support was so fantastic like support staff think, the hoards of spin off phpbb support sites would not even get traction - maybe immigrating to Australia would suit - plenty of Ostrich's there !

The topic you linked was almost four years old. Please judge us by our present actions rather than something from that long ago. ;)

As far as getting discussion on your topic, perhaps others weren't interested or didn't have anything to add to the topic? Or the topic was worded in a way that made it difficult to foster discussion? I often try when starting discussions such as asking views to state my question, then give my opinion of the question I'm asking. Clarity is key. The way you present yourself in a topic will tend to change the way others reply to you, I've found. :)

Oxymoron or what ? - I often try when starting discussions such as asking views to state my question

A support ticket system is well overdue here - not this current very poor system of pot luck for help

I don't think so. Tickets make sense for commercial company that hires people to provide support. phpBB uses community based support. Tickets don't help anyone other than person who made a ticket, support forum threads can be accessed by other people.

Exactly - this place would not survive against the commercial equivalent where time matters.

If everytime you went into mc donalds and ordered a big mac and 100 people that ordered After you got their burger before you would you be very happy ?
