That's a good guess but not something we've been doing or following. ;) RC4 has not yet been mentioned (there would be a topic about planning a release for it in Area 51 just like all other RCs). If you go by the tracker you could say that we will be in RCs forever because once any RC is published the next RC version will be created in the tracker right after regardless of if we actually do it or not. So expect the RC5 version to be created in the tracker if we do go with an RC4.

Just finish this!
Seven years since the release of 3.0.0 and then only minor changes (bugfix).
Updates are taking to long, phpbb is turning into dinosaur.
3.1 better be major update from 3.0 after all that time.

Really? Then you didn't notice the AJAX-ified functions or the moderation tools grouping or the responsive layout or the change in the navigation items or the improvements in the style or the new extensions system or the notifications system or the... (you get the picture). It's also in use on Area 51 if you want to take another look as it doesn't look like you've tried RC3 at all.

If what you're looking for is another style then you can just install a different one on your current 3.0 and call it new and fresh product. There is a whole lot more to releasing a new version of phpBB than just changing the paint job. ;)

I did notice the AJAX-ified functions, but didn't find it impressive.

I was hoping for more powerful static page, user - karma system, etc. Something for the "user" to feel not just the admins when browsing ACP.
Basic and useful add-on like PM email notify, autobackup, avatar left/right, automod and karma system should be integrated in the system.

those are , of course, your opinions of what should be in the system. others will not agree.

you can't put everything in. phpbb is supposed to be a basic bulletin board system and then you add in the things you want for your board.

3.0 used MODs that often required edits to the core.
3.1 uses extensions that do not.

luck,

That's great!
No more crashing after installing Mod's.

Karma is something that not everyone wants, as Lumpy said, and not everyone agrees with how it should be implemented. You will find a whole lot of users that will disagree with you on having Karma in the core. Plus nothing on your own personal wishlist that you've listed can be considered vital for inclusion in the core product and none of it is impossible to do for extensions. Drop one in and voila...you have your desired functionality.

I have to agree, to have "clean" core and mods who does not mess up the core is great!
My previous comment on this thread show a lack of technical knowledge of phpbb.
Thank you all for explaining this so well.

What about 3.0.12 styles, does it work on 3.1 or is it all new from scratch ?

it will be all new from scratch. no 3.0 styles or MODs will work with 3.1

however, the styles and extensions people are working hard to have lots of options by the time 3.1 is officially released.
