Nav Bar Additions

Post by moonshine »

I would appreciate it if someone could give a tutorial in adding additional links into the nav bar in 3.1.3

There are several previous posts covering this topic but all (that I've found) are related to earlier versions and clearly the files concerned are different in some respects.

All I need to do is add a number (not sure exactly how many at the moment but will certainly be added to at a later date - space allowing) of nav links with their associated url's.

I will be be having just text links with no separators.

Had a little experience way back with HTML 4 and CSS 2.

Thanks

navbar_header.html and/or navbar_footer.html
however, there is not really much room there for more links depending on how you work it.

the breadcrumbs will take over most of the bottom half of the navbar and the links in the top half will also stretch out.

check the extensions forums , there are a couple that will do what you are wanting to do without doing the edits to the actual files.

You can use this extension instead of editing styles: http://www.artodia.com/downloads/phpbb31/extranav.zip

Its a basic extension that adds few links to navigation. I'm using it on my dev forum to add extra dummy links to navigation to test responsive navigation.

Unpack it to directory "ext", install.

Then go to directory ext/arty/extranav/styles/all/template/event. In that directory you'll find 5 template files for different navigation items. Each file has comment explaining where that navigation appears. Remove ones you don't need, edit navigation in templates that you need. Most likely you need to keep only overall_header_navigation_prepend.html. Purge cache after editing or deleting templates.

Arty,

Thanks for the reply.

I think the one I need is the bottom one [secondary_navlinks_after.html] to append on the secondary nav links bar after the 'Board index' link but I see it is only for the Artodia style. The secondary nav bar gives me more room for a few more links.

Arty,

Thinking about this I decided that your first template was the way to go with a quicklinks drop down menu.
Uploaded it > enabled it > ran it on test and found the three test links not only appeared in the drop down but also one in each main and secondary nav bars. I'd forgotten to delete the other templates. No problem, me thinks, so I did it without disabling the extension first. Everything except the header image was wiped off the page!! So I have that mess to sort out first. I think it's going to be a long night.............

Sounds like something went wrong with cache. Try purging it again.

Arty,

Could you remind me how to purge the cache from my ftp client - it's the only way I can access my directories and files.

Arty,

I remembered and all is now well.

The drop down is definitely the best option - thanks for your help.

Delete all files in directory "cache", except for index.htm and .htaccess
Or click "purge cache" button on admin control panel's main page.
