Anyone Installed Keycapthcha In phpBB 3.1.9?

Post by ClassicMan »

Hello Everyone,

Having read all 41 pages of the spam topic (viewtopic.php?f=46&t=1861645) I am fairly familiar with the stragies available.

I know some folk are opposed to the Keycaptcha method and it really isn't my intention to upset anyone but there are aspects to this that are of interest to me.

I did look at the trial and free versions of this using phpBB 3.0.14 and installed Keycaptcha successfully and it worked without any problems.

However, I'm unable to get this working in phpBB 3.1.9. which I am now using. I did download the correct version of Keycaptcha (3.1.xxx) and followed the instructions to install. However, it doesn't show in the ACP Spambot Counter Measures.

So, back to my original subject, is there anyone reading this who has successfully installed Keycaptcha in 3.1.9?

I did raise a ticket in my Keycaptcha account almost a day-and-a-half ago and have had zero response .. not even an aknowledgement. So, not so good at support it seems which has dampened my interest.

I'd appreciate any help with this.

Many thanks.

I have been running KeyCaptcha for months since 3.1.5 maybe (I can't remember how long TBH) but not tried it on a fresh install.

They have also ported it to 3.2.0 at my request. (which also works perfectly)

I think KeyCaptcha is something of a 'one man band' operation. All of my tickets have been answered, but occasionally there is a delay in replying.

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about private info you don't want out for everyone to see.

Hello HiFiKabin,

Thanks for your reply and offer, it's much appreciated.

If it's all working for you then it has to be something I'm doing wrong. Perhaps you would be kind enough to just check my following actions to start with.

On the Keycaptcha site for phBB there are two downloads to select from, (a) 3.0.6 and above (b) 3.1.x to 3.2.x As I have phpBB 3.1.9, naturally, I selected download (b) 3.1.x to 3.2.x

I unpacked the zip file and there was one directory in there named 'ext'.

The instructions to install simply say:

[Quote]
Copy all files and directories from the archive to the root directory of your phpBB
[Unquote]

So .. I opened the Keycaptcha downloaded 'ext' folder and uploaded the keycaptcha folder there to my board 'ext' directory. I went to my ACP and no Keycaptcha listed under 'Spambot countermeasures'.

The next thing I tried was to go into the Keycaptcha download>ext>keycaptcha and there are 5 directories and 3 files there. I tried uploading these individually to my board 'ext' directory. Same result.

The last thing I tried was to upload the 5 directories to the corresponding board directories .. adm files to board adm (not in the ext), styles files to board styles and so on which is exactly what I did for the phpBB 3.0.14. In 3.1.9 still no Keycaptcha listed under 'Spambot countermeasures'.

Do you recall doing any of the above?

Thanks.

Did you install the extension under the Customise tab first?

So far so good. Uploading the files to the ext folder is correct.
  • root
    • ext
      • keycaptcha
        • keycaptcha
Then go to the customise tab and enable KeyCaptcha

Now you have to select KeyCaptcha in Spambot Countermeasures.

then the page refreshes to

hit configure

enter your code>submit>back to previous page

select KeyCaptcha

page refreshes

KeyCaptcha will appear in the selection box>submit

Long winded, but thats the sequence (which I had to go through myself again as its too fussy to remember it all)

That should sort it, but if you have any further problems, just shout

Hello HiFiKabin and Jim,

Jim, thanks for responding.

Kevin thanks for your details and screenshots.

The thing is I can't even get it showing in the Customise tab.

I unpacked the Keycaptcha download and have the downloaded 'ext' folder.

I opened the downloaded 'ext' folder and have the following directories there:
keycaptcha
keycaptcha
adm, capture, config, language, styles, composer, json, ext.php, license.txt

I've tried uploading everything as is and just the second keycaptcha with the files and directories. Then, after each try, I go to my board and the 'Customise' tab, I've tried 'Manage Extensions' but there's nothing showing there.

I understand there is already a solver for this CAPTCHA, so I don't know how much effort I would expend on this.

I hadn't heard that, but fingers, toes and eyes crossed I have been spambot free even since I have first used it

Hello HiFiKabin,

Yes, I think my board directory looks ok. Here's a screenshot from filezilla.

Hello cprgolds,

Has Keycaptcha really been cracked?? This sounds incredible, it's such a strong solution.!

Looks OK to me (assuming that your real forum is in the 'community' directory)

Try a fresh download of keycaptcha, see if thats the problem.

Hello HiFiKabin,

Thanks for checking that for me.

That's astounding news that Keycaptcha has been solved by spambots .. almost unbelievable.

Anyway, I'll try a fresh download and have a go in the morning.

Best wishes,

Michael
