You can even create an htaccess for the install folder. And adding just permissions for your IP.

I don't understand this. You have to be logged in as Admin to get to the ACP to conduct an update. Also, you can password protect your ADM folder. I would add Ninjafirewall. http://nintechnet.com/ninjafirewall/pro-edition/

I never do an update from the admin panel.

1. download complete package zip
2. unzip
3. upload all files except for config.php
4. run install/database_update.php
5. delete folder named install.

done.

Here are the steps i took for a successful upgrade

MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SERVER AND JUST COPY FROM IT AND ADD TO A "NEW" FILE, DON'T MODIFY IT.

1) download phpbb3 stable server new
2) name the downloaded folder new
3) copy the config.php file, files folder, images folder and styles folder from your existing phpbb3
4) paste the config.php file, files folder, images folder and styles folder into the new folder, replacing the files that exist in the fresh new phpbb3 download with the files from your forum.
5) remove the install directory
6) make sure the database can be accessed successfully by pointing your browser to http://www.board.com/new, it is referenced in the config.php file, also ensure the board, admin control panel, and all features are working properly after the upgrade. If not, revert to your original server. If pages show up blank or corrupt, simply go back to step 1 and try again.
7) Those files are the only ones you need to upgrade to a new file and forum version, you don't need to change the database, as long as config.php is copied, it should reference it. If not, visit http://www.board.com/forums/install/database_update.php and it should help. If you deleted your install directory, you can re install the stable new server and copy the install directory from there, then access the database_update.php page. If you can't access your admin control panel or post new topics, you likely need to start over, or if any other features are missing. If you get the error: cache could not be read, simply change the permissions of the cache folder using

Code: Select all

chmod 777 cache
. Most problems can be fixed by simply downloading a new copy of the server and replacing the 4 files listed above.

NOTICE: If you use prosilver, you should leave the new/styles/prosilver template so that it remains updated.

NO VISIBLE CHANGES
Thanks for the heads up. We're looking into this.
This has now been resolved as well.

no harm in that but also no need to do anything other than the few steps I showed above unless you are modifying your core phpbb files for some reason.

one of the main differences between 3.0 and 3.1 is the use of extensions and also child styles.

with the use of extensions, there is really no need to edit any of the core phpbb files. therefore, when updating you simply replace/overwrite them all with new ones except for the config.php file.

as for the those three folders that they always talk about removing from the new files that is not really necessary either.

whenever you upload a folder to the server that has the same name as one already there, it does not overwrite the folder, it merges the new folder contents with the contents of the old folder.
for instance, the folder named "files" has two default files in it. ( index.htm and .htaccess )

when you upload the new folder it will simply overwrite those two files with the new ones in the new folder.
it will not affect any of the attachments that are in the folder on the server.
Therefore, there is really no reason to remove those folders or do any of those steps to update from one version to the next.

also, the updates have been tested to work so there is really no need to do a test update like you showed above.
you have done a lot of steps that are just not needed.

worse case is that the whole thing would fail ( not much chance of that at all ) but you would only be a couple of clicks away from a complete recovery because you made backups of everything before you started.

luck,
robert

Or, to discover new features: [PHPBB3-14819] Soft deleted posts visible in topic review :)

kinerity - Can you please edit the titles to include "Custom Profile Field" in the discussion topic and bug tracker? I had no idea what "CPF" meant until it was explained in the discussion.

- Can not edit CPFs after 3.1.10 update
- [PHPBB3-14823] Unable to edit CPFs after 3.1.10 update - phpBB Tracker

I can reproduce this bug, but it is not a blocker for me.

Maybe this highlights a need have something like a wiki that lists manual test cases that everyone can go through during RCs so that this sort of thing doesn't happen. :)

Would the phpBB Development Wiki be appropriate for this list?
