But you only get redirected if you are logged in as an Admin when you do the update/upgrade.
You can update while not being logged in? Has that always been the case??

I *think* that it has always been the case with 3.1.x (though with my memory who knows)

I was not logged on for my 4 upgrades today (various testing not live fora)

And the process is an "opt out" not an "opt in" as is being implied by both Marc and Marshalrusty.
The intended behavior is to require the administrator to make an affirmative decision, so this is just a bug.

If you update with file replacement - yes.
Marshalrusty wrote:The intended behavior is to require the administrator to make an affirmative decision, so this is just a bug.
That is OK then - but, in my opinion, it should be "opt in" and not "opt out"

Sounds like VigLink can bring in some support revenue for phpBB. I think this is a good thing

I have one question. How come there is no "donate" button on the phpBB website? If all the users who used the software donated just $5 a year, the need for ads may not be needed at all.

That would be 2.384.785 $ per year just for this board alone.

How about a progress bar so we can see how much people donate on top of the website and ask people to donate?
Like on http://www.fsf.org/
I like to see the progress bar, it feels like we are going somewhere. If it moves that is.

You can set a goal for 6 months and let it run and see how maybe will be donated.
If the bar does not reach the goal you write "Donate or VigLink extension will be enabled but default".

For what I read it here, it's already enabled by default.

If all users donated $5, then we wouldn't have a problem. The reality is that unfortunately donations are never as forthcoming as people hope. Wikipedia famously states during their donation drive that if everyone reading their website at that particular moment gave $3, they would immediately hit their targets, and yet the drives last for weeks. In short, while I'm not saying that we'll never accept donations, it would not provide the steady revenue stream that our organization needs.

Forcing VigLink on administrators who refuse to send us money is out of the question.

Just as an aside - VigLink does not inspire a lot of confidence at the moment with their website which, to me, appears to missing some .css files.

Loads just fine for me.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again? :)

Ah, I see what you mean. Looks like there's a problem when visiting the site over SSL, but it loads fine over http.

Why not do both, the (optional) extension and paypal donations? I will never have advertising/affiliates on my site but I would donate if the option were available. Given the number of posts on this site from people wanting to monetize their forums for their own benefit, I suspect the majority will happily take the money for themselves rather than it benefiting the phpBB organisation.

This really would be optimal. I will never have advertisements on my forum. However, I would be happy to donate a small sum on a yearly basis for the continued support and time that the developers put into this project.
