The only reason for this that I can think of is that the phpBB version isn't defined correctly.

Open [board root]/includes/constants.php
Find // phpBB Version
What does the line below that one say?

It looks like your update from 3.1.6 to 3.1.10 didn't complete successfully. By simply changing the version to 3.1.10 you will be able to install mChat but you might run into problems if other parts of the code are still from 3.1.6. It can cause problems with other extensions as well.

The only real solution is to make sure all your phpBB files are up to date.

Run the automatic update package, it should detect files that are not up to date.

This is new. Just got a message from our web host about mChat:

"You have an auto-refreshing script that uses a notable amount of CPU and is triggering every 10 seconds, causing a higher load on the machine and some overall performance problems."

My Refresh Interval is set to 10 seconds. That's the only script I can think of that's running.

Phpbb 3.1.9
mChat 2.0.0-RC7

That is what your host means. The shoutbox is refreshing every 10 seconds to show any new messages in it and some shared host don't like people running things like a shoutbox with a forum doing it... because it does increase CPU usage on the shared box. Unfortunately, that is a problem with using a shoutbox on a shared host, many don't like it done.

You could increase it from 10 seconds to something like 20 or 30 seconds instead (not ideal) if being used a lot though, also make sure your not pulling too many shouts at once in shoutbox pages being loaded. Limit it on forum home to about 10 shouts only displayed, and about 20 on shoutbox main page. But most likely your host now isn't happy about you running it with the forum. They might end up telling you to get a VPS with them if wanting to carry on using it.

You might also consider using a different shared host. I run MCHAT refreshing at 10 seconds with my shared host for a few months now and they've not complained about it, and see looking a resources monitor in cPanel I've had no issues logged with it used and CPU stays low around 6.0 to 6.2 usage out 100%, which is nothing.

Thanks, mrgtb.

On another note, mChat has been working fairly well for me for about a year now, but recently it is no longer refreshing. It makes a beep noise and displays an "Error Forbidden" at every 30 second refresh interval, and then displays "Update is off" at the bottom: http://i.imgur.com/2no8EEg.png

I didn't have this issue with versions before v2.0.0, but they are no longer on your Releases page so I can't test them. I'm also reasonably sure I didn't have the issue with v2.0.0 RC-5, so I might try wiping mChat and reinstalling that to see if I can duplicate the issue.

This might have something to do with my web host, too. Perhaps they sent me the warning I posted above and then did something to limit the script at the same time. I'll check with them as well.

phpBB 3.1.9
mChat 2.0.0-RC7

EDIT: Nevermind. This was my web host editing my htaccess file without my knowledge. Having a script running more than once every 30 seconds is against their rules (very basic hosting package), but it would've been nice for them to inform me of the edit. Anyway, thanks for this great extension.

I hava a proposition - in archive view, sort messages from older (top) to newer (down), so they are easier to read. Now when you read archive, you have to read it from down to top which is awkward. This setting is independent from "new messages location" in normal (not archive) chat window.

Yes, I agree. I was always confused by the reversed order of messages in the archive. Here's a ticket you can follow: https://github.com/kasimi/mChat/issues/13

Meanwhile, mChat has been successfully validated. Thanks to everyone who helped getting mChat to where it is today. :)
