I just checked and Bluehost verified that I meet those requirements.

Now I just have to figure out how to proceed.

I thank everyone for their help. Wish I had listened to you sooner.

Knowledge Base - Updating 3.2.x should help.
Thank you for this Mick.

The directions are very clear but I have some questions. I hope you can help me.

Step 1. Backup all board files and the database.
- I was given these instructions by Bluehost for making a backup:
-Compress the folder public_html (compress by right-clicking on the root folder, then compress)
-Download the zip file to ftp

Q. Can you tell me if that will backup both the DB and the board files? OR Should I use the Backup tool in ACP This seems more sensible to me. (if yes it would help a lot if you could tell me the settings I should use)

Step 6. Using FTP, delete the /vendor and /cache folders from the board's root folder on the host.

Q. Do I just "Move" these files from the root folder to my FTP?

Step 7. (Note: take care not to delete any extensions in your /ext folder when uploading the new phpBB3 contents.)

Q. By "taking care" does this mean when asked if I want to overwrite files I answer YES except for the /ext folder to which I answer, NO?

One last question: Is it okay if I have the board set to "disabled" during the upgrade process?

Step 1-Follow the back up instructions in Knowledge Base - Transferring Your Board to a New Host or Domain, I suggest you use phpMyAdmin for the database. Use your FTP client to back up all the files, it works like file manager on your desktop machine.

Step 6-Follow the instructions literally, if it says delete then delete. FTP isn’t a ‘thing’ like an egg is a thing, it’s software that you use like file manager to manage files but on a server as opposed to on a desktop. You don’t upload and download TO it you upload and download to and from the server USING it.

Step 7-You can overwrite all the remaining files and folders you are just being warned to make sure you don’t delete what you shouldn’t. Obviously, don’t over write config.php. You’ll have a back up anyway.

Okay, I'm at the last steps here in my update and here is what it tells me:

Incomplete update
We noticed that the last update of your phpBB installation hasn’t been completed. Visit the database updater, ensure Update database only is selected and click on Submit. Don't forget to delete the "install"-directory after you have updated the database sucessfully.

Where do I find the "database updater" ?

Thanks!

I did that. I came to a page that told me to delete the install file. But since I hadn't updated yet, I didn't do that.
I went to the ACP, System and this is where I see this message.

When you went to the ACP did you see a page with two options "Send statistics" and "Enable Viglink"? If you did you need to check/uncheck the two boxes on that page in order to complete the installation/update/upgrade

No I didn't see that but I know the page you're talking about. I think I have to delete the install file before I see that.

I made a mistake earlier and now I have found my way to this page:

But I'm not sure how to proceed. I want to update the database only.

I can't select that on the left and I am afraid to hit the install button before I know what will happen when I do.

Sorry Steve, you were right, I did it wrong. I'm still a bit confused though. See my next post please. Thanks.

I promised myself a gin & tonic if I ever get this finished today. I'm so close. But I don't want to screw up the last bit.

Done. It looks a success. thank you and everybody. I wish I could make you all a gin & tonic right now but I promise to drink to you.

In all seriousness, I've never done something like this before and I never could have without all the help.

Thanks again.

I think I found what may have been the problem with the submitting forms causing an error.

In security settings is this option:

Maximum time to submit forms:
The time a user has to submit a form. Use -1 to disable. Note that a form might become invalid if the session expires, regardless of this setting.

It was set on 1 second, by default I guess. Which would explain why the problem happened so often.

I changed it to -1 and so far the problem seems gone.

I do not know how I missed the existence of this setting, unless it was not available in v.3.2.0.

The good news is the problem sort of forced me to upgrade to 3.2.2 which I am very glad I did.

I hope this is the end of the issue.
