Is PHPBB right for me?

Post by Winterdiva » Thu Aug 30, 2018 9:29 am

Hi all,

I am trying to build a community (a simple discussion forum). Just starting out and never done this before, so please be patient with me ! I have some programming experience, but thats from the days of structured programming COBOL etc.

Is PHPBB easy to customise for a simple discussion forum?

Thanks, any relevant advise welcome!

You can try the demo out
https://www.phpbb.com/demo/

There's a login, you can create forums and posts and then it'll delete in an hour.

You can also install it on your own computer for a longer try
Installing and Setting Up Your Own Web Server

When it comes to customising I guess it depends what you want to do. You can certainly change the logo and colours pretty easily or install a whole new style. Extra features can be added with extensions which are just uploaded and activated. No coding needed.

That sounds great. Thanks KevC

I have a feeling that most of my users might want to participate via an app (on their mobiles). Is that possible with PhpBB ?

phpBB 3.2.x is responsive so it's not really necessary. There is a third party app called tapatalk but it has quite a lot of known security issues.

Would it be possible to make it an invite only forum?

Yes - you set up a Q&A for registration with the question "What is the secret code?" (or something similar) and then give the code to those you want to be members.
