How qualified do you need to be to set up and run a phpBB based forum? It’s a question that I have recently been discussing with a friend. Does the work need to be farmed out to professional programers or can be it done in-house by someone with a modicum of understanding of IT? My impression of phpBB has always been, and one of the joys of using the software, is that it can be successfully used by those of all levels of IT competence. Perhaps the more competence the person has the better the forum that can be built. However that said someone with a lesser level of competence can still build a forum that is quite acceptable. Am I right? Is that a fair assessment?
In addition what is considered to be the minimum level of IT competence needed to write and set up a phpBB based forum?
Incidentally I am on this forum because phpBB is of interest to me. I am an administrator cum moderator on a forum built by someone else. I now know my way around that forum and can carry out various tasks but no way do I consider myself a programer.
There’s no minimum qualification or experience required. As long as you know how to navigate a computer (search, mark, copy, cut, paste, edit etc.) then learn how to apply that knowledge using FTP you should be able to install and maintain a phpBB bulletin board and you will learn along the way. The main thing in my eyes is the ability to be able to read, comprehend and follow instructions. People who use mobile devices only could well struggle.

Mick, many thanks for that. As a phpBB layman that’s what I have said for quite a while but it’s good to have confirmation from someone much more involved with the phpBB than I am. In fact from what you say it is even easier to use than I had thought!
