Is phpbb directory good for all versions?

Post by abrogard » Fri Sep 28, 2018 10:08 pm

I have a board that we can't get working since the host moved it to a new platform.

Apparently the phpbb directory was missing some files so I've copied over a completely new instance taken from a download of the latest release of phpbb.

now I get a 'catchable error' so I'm wondering if it was valid to expect this new copy to work?

the board is (supposedly) at mblforum.com

As i see it.. some folders and files are missing, seems like a mess after unzipping files directly into server.

You've seen the dir? I didn't unzip on the host. I downloaded, unzipped and ftp'd that dir back up there after renaming the original /oldphpbb/.

Perhaps my ftp was incomplete then.

I should try it again perhaps?

You need to use a copy that is from the same version as your board. If it's not the latest, you can download a copy of the older releases from here: https://download.phpbb.com/pub/release/3.2/

Thanks for that. 3.1.9 it tells me.

That's not good news is it? Too old.

I've found a zip download might be it.

ah, no. it seems to be full of upgrades..

Support for 3.1 has ended, the only help we can give you is with upgrading so I recommend you upgrade to the latest version following:

Notes:
  • Your server must be running at least PHP 5.4.7 or higher.
  • phpBB 3.2 is not completely backwards compatible with 3.1 and custom edits may no longer work. The easiest upgrade method is to remove all existing files prior to upgrading and re-applying custom changes after verifying their correctness.

To upgrade, perform the following steps:
  1. Make a back-up of the original files and database
  2. Deactivate all styles except for prosilver
  3. Deactivate any extensions which are not compatible with phpBB 3.2. Check with the extension author to find out if an extension is compatible or not.
  4. Ensure that the activated spambot countermeasure is one of the standard phpBB plugins (Simple image, GD image, GD 3D image, Q&A, reCaptacha).
  5. Set British English as the only language pack and delete all other language pack directories from your server
  6. Delete all of your phpBB 3.1.x files EXCEPT for the following:
    • The config.php file
    • The /ext/ directory
    • The /images/ directory
    • The /files/ directory
    • The /store/ directory
  7. Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from the uncompressed 3.2.x Full Package (EXCEPT for config.php) into your forum's directory (Note: you don't want to overwrite your original config.php file)
  8. Browse to www.example.com/install/
  9. Click the Update tab
  10. Click the Update button
  11. Select "Update database only" and click Submit
  12. Wait for the progress bar to reach 100% and for a message indicating that the update has completed
  13. Delete or rename the /install/ directory

if there is nothing else I can do then of course I will try to follow your instructions and upgrade.

If I can: note I cannot currently access the board. That's what all this is about.

I cannot even get it to start up.

Hence it would be nice if I could get a sample /phpbb/ directory tree which might be enough to make my board accessible. Then I could proceed with upgrades per standard procedures.

You can find a fresh copy of 3.1.9 here. If your host moved you and now things don't work I'd be talking to my host, very sternly.

You're a gentleman and a scholar, Mick. The board has sprung to life. Haven't logged in yet just rushed here to announce that good news. Upload of phpbb from the version at your link did the trick. Hopefully my recorded username and password will work.

Lovely. Thanks a lot.

Yes, I'm talking to the host but he'll doubtless put up some flim flammery of an excuse/reason and try and point it back at me and I won't bother fighting, just try and carry on and hope things will be better.

But he was remiss without a doubt. I was moved to the new platform and then - and only then, after the move - was I informed that I'd need to change the sql db names of all db's and all sql and email user names and all passwords.

And, of course, while I hadn't done those things sites that required those things were broken.

Now that's remiss, isn't it? You don't break things, require reconfigurations, without prior warning, surely?

But, water under the bridge. If we can get going now then fine.

Out of time now. Tomorrow perhaps I'll be able to get into mblforum and begin the update procedure.

:)

p.s. yes, logged in fine. says my last login was aug 30 2017 !
