phpBB forum with membership

Post by Pysiek »

Is there a way to create a forum with phpBB so you have to pay membership fee to join it?

The same way as with paid membership on countless websites: Use admin activation (and allow guests to see only the absolute neccessary) and only active after confirmation of payment.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

This feature has been sorely needed. Lots of people nowadays are wanting to monetize their site in any way possible, and paid membership subscriptions are a somewhat standard practice in niche communities.

potential solution (beta) - This extension is in beta, but it is the most promising solution thus far.

This one is in the CBD, but it only supports one donor group. You could modify the donations extension to allow for more groups if you know how, then I guess there would be two solutions...

No extension is necessary. Make (at least) one forum visible to Guests and in its description:

"To join this Board, Register and PayPal 1000 Polish Zlotys to [email protected]." When your payment is received your account will be activated."

Done.

And then when they stop paying you have to remove them manually?

Not very optimal.

You can use Amember for a membership site with Phpbb, it is very solid.

With Amember they can pay you with Paypal, Stripe and many other payment processors.
This is a test signature. I hope you love it :D

That's always assuming you can get them to pay in the first place of course. I don't suppose there'll be many to remove, I certainly wouldn't join a "pay for view" message board.

Toxyy mentioned one beta extension above, if that doesn't do what you need/want, then you need to request an extension that does.

As I said Amember can do all that.

If you request an extension like that, you might get it in 20 years :)
