Color & Background, Header edits NOT working, not showing up

Post by WStudios »

Hi,
This is the first time I've felt the need to create a post here. I generally try to research and exhaust all possibilities prior to asking any potentially ignorant questions, as I know you guys are super busy (but we all appreciate your help) :)

I just updated to 3.2.4 and began editing & modifying an attempt at a new style that I am wanting to match similarly as possible to the one I have on my front end, (and despite) MULTIPLE attempts the css edits are not showing up on either one of my web browsers (Chrome, Edge)----- NOTHING WORKS.

I am trying to modify my background from a color to an image, the header image/colors, table colors, link/hover colors, basically changing the color scheme from prosilvers blue to my own custom style of reds, blacks, greys, whites and warmer colors all around.

- I first tried modifying the colour.css file from inside my CPanel, (no option to go inside ACP to Style / Refresh) so I kept purging the cache, ctrl + F5 hard refresh, I made sure ALL images were named correctly, and inside the proper file paths, etc. (didn't work) I did just about everything I found posted on here by members of Development & Support Teams, to no avail. NOTHING.

I can usually figure it out on my own, but not this time it seems. It's normally something pretty simple too. Believe me, I have searched, and followed any and all advice given in learning articles and older posts.

I don't understand what's going on. Using FTP (which is primary) didn't work, nor did the CPanel uploads. I also tried the simple edit using Google Developer Tools right on the outside of the webpage itself. (Meaning--- I open & edit the files themselves from inside chrome (you can pull up the files from your computer and edit them w/chrome, saving them to your computer and then re-uploading via ftp etc. So, after re-uploading, still no changes despite the changes being there inside the files. Despite Purging the Cache, Hard Refreshes, Correct File Paths, (checking that they were correct using my browser) etc.

Using ATOM text editor didn't help... (again, external and my first choice) I try not to edit anything inside my ACP if I can help it, nor do I use auto-installers. I'm sure it's something simple.... Any idea's? I'm hoping this is the correct spot to ask these questions, and I apologize in advance if it's not. I hate that I have to bother you guys.

Here's the screenshot of what I am wanting:
SS Coulors CSS.png
And despite showing inside my files that the css HAS been edited & CHANGED, when I refresh Chrome or Edge, it's STILL Prosilver. No changes whatsoever, and then when I inspect the element--- it shows Prosilver's default colour.css file.

Here's my forum: https://watchmanstudios.com/forum

I literally wanna throw a brick right now, as this is just boggling me. :? I feel like I've done everything correctly for the most part, but definitely open to any help you guys can give me. Thankyou again. I really apprecite it.

What exactly are you trying to change?
When you change anything in the Inspect box of Chrome, it is only changing it temporarily for your webbrowser session. You cannot write the actual file from there. Otherwise all of your users would be missing up your files.

Are you sure you uploaded the edited colours.css file in the right place. Did it asked you if you want to overwrite the old file? Did you clicked yes when asked?

Thank you for responding, I had ATOM opened, but Chrome also allows you to make changes & you can save & upload those files to the proper folders. :) Sorry-- prob should have clarified that a bit better. Not long after I posted this, it somehow fixed itself. Then I, fixed the background issue. There's still a few other kinks i've noticed, so I'm hoping to figure those out as well. I appreciate the help.

Yes, I had even checked my cpanel to make sure I hadn't accidentally reuploaded prosilver's (which I hadn't) oddly enough (maybe an hour after I had posted this) I logged back in for the 25th time and FINALLY the changes appeared in Chrome. The changes prior had first appeared inside Edge. This also happened last night, so I'm a bit stumped by that. There are still a few more kinks i've noticed--- but I believe they may be related to an ext I just installed earlier today called pgsocial network. Again, I really appreciate the help you guys offer. :)

if you want to edit the style files you need to actually edit the files. any other method will eventuallyl corrupt the whole mess.

use ftp only, download the relevant html/css files to your computer.

use a text editor ONLY to open/edit the files.

when finished, upload the edited file back to the server using ftp and let it overwrite the existing one.

you must purge the cache from the admin panel or, via ftp, delete every thing from the cache folder except for the index and htaccess files.
or, you can go to the admin panel, general tab, load settings, and check yes for "recompile stale style settings".

then you don't have to purge the cache after every change, just refresh your browser to see them.

if you adopt this procedure for making changes to the style it will make it a very quick and basically foolproof method of doing it.

luck,
robert

Thank you Robert! :) I will keep that in mind. For the most part, I only use ATOM (text editor similar to Notepad ++) with FTP and I see what you're saying. I won't edit from Chrome anymore. I'll only use it as a visual reference. I had it checked to automatically recompile stale style settings (which is helpful) and I figured out the issues I was having (with trying to add a background image, getting it to repeat properly, and modifying the colors) which I have done successfully so far (still working on perfecting it though) Great advice, and I hope others who see this will benefit from it too.

The only other odd thing, is that i've noticed that none of my style modifications (css edits) show up on either browsers I use (Chrome, Edge) until after I sign into ACP. Weird, right? That's every time. Is it just my browsers, on my laptop being wonky? Are yall seeing the original prosilver theme? Or, my modified style? Because if you're seeing prosilver, then no one (other than me) is seeing the css changes.

Latest version of phpBB has in common.php 'PHPBB_ENVIRONMENT' with values "development" and "production" and if is set to "production" You have to logon with admin session and "Delete" the cache in ACP.

@define('PHPBB_ENVIRONMENT', 'production');

Or You can manually delete a twig in "cache/production/twig".

I am trying to change the color scheme, (links, hovers, tables, background, etc.) from prosilvers bluish theme to a color scheme that consists of blacks, reds, greys and warmer colors.

I just checked common.css and it was already set to "development", cleared the twigs manually via ftp and it's still showing up on Both Browsers (chrome & Edge) as the prosilver theme when I'm not logged into ACP-- I even tried clearing the cache from ACP and then doing another hard refresh (ctrl +F5) and it still shows up as prosilver...

Actually, Robert and Ashley, not true chrome edits are perfectly fine as long as you are not editing on the live version but instead on a test version first. In fact, this is usually how I work on fixes and what, not for prosilver ;) well a combo of that and ATOM.
