Is there any problem when change the domain from .com to .net ? the name is the same of old one but only change from .com to .net
No problem search engine or anything else ?
There is an old domain and a customer want to change it. I wonder if it is maybe bad idea or cause some problems.

Some fields in the config table will have to be edited to reflect the new domain.
Internal links in the forum will have to be fixed (depending on how they were stored a reparse might suffice).
If you use SMTP, the settings will have to be updated.
Basically it's like changing host (but a little bit less of a hassle).
Search engines? they will find the new site, I wouldn't worry about that.

But users might not find it unless there is a redirect in place

As .com is far far better known than .net isn't it business 'suicide' to change to the less familiar option?

mass-mail to all users (or PM from the new domain with mail-notification)?
announcement before the change?
That's one thing I really wouldn't worry about. It's actually a good time to clean up the memberlist. ;)

The bigger question is why the board owner wants to change and what benefits he expects to gain?

.com is cheaper than .net when he renew the domain
.com is better familiar & known than .net

True statements. Although if I had already been using myname.net, by default position would be to keep myname.net and redirect it to my now-preferred myname.com. So anywhere that still has links, bookmarks, prior emails, etc., referring to myname.net will continue to work 100% successfully. Even though when they follow those links now, they will end up on myname.com because of the redirect.

Meaning you would be getting the "better known & familiar" benefit, but not the cost benefit, because now you own two domains.

... but people who already use the site are happy with whatever.net and obviously there isn't a whatever.com competing (otherwise the domain would not be available)

Personally I can not see any advantage in changing (other than the cost, and you would loose money to start with as you will need both domains running for a year in order to redirect all traffic from the old to the new domain)

now days .com versus .net really makes no difference. people don't type in urls anymore, they click on links and usually don't even read what the link says.

if you switch your tld you will lose whatever ranking your pages may have in search engines until they find the site again.

if you put in a 301 redirect into the htaccess file of your root that tells all traffic that you have moved from .net to .com then you should not lose much, if any, SEO juice from it.

also, you will gain absolutelly zero benefits changing from .net to .com

so, my suggestion is to leave it alone.

oh, if you are paying more for a .net than you are for a .com then you need to be buying your domain names from somebody else.
I have seen this cost difference a few times in the last couple of years but it is not the industry standard as far as I know.

Probably, everything depends on the owner's choice if he wants to do that.

Keep Note: You will have to own the 2 tld the .com & the .net, then do a 301 redirect in your .htaccess to point to the .com
